Churchill news from April 2024
Every month, our school council (CASC) meets to discuss events, fundraising, and other school-related topics. As part of the meeting, our teacher representative provides an update on some of the events that occur in the school. In addition, our principal sends out a weekly email which often includes a bit of information about what's happening around the school. While this post does not capture every event that happened this month, it does provide some highlights as shared by our staff.

The Wolves and Bumblebees were excellent listeners during a fire safety and prevention presentation by firefighters Lianne and Richard. Students were taught to use their senses to smell, see, hear and touch their way outdoors and once outdoors to STAY OUTDOORS.
The wolves have been exploring space after learning all about astronaut Jeremy Hansen. We built a massive spaceship that travels the darkest corners of space and we have been learning about Chris Hadfield and how he does simple tasks such as brushing his teeth, going to sleep and washing his hair while out in space.
The wolves were excited about the delivery of eggs! We have been writing our guesses on paper as to what could be inside the eggs. So far, dinosaurs, birds, and dolls. Surprise - they were QUAILS!
KinderWolves and their older buddies in the Cacti class are working hard on a spring project. First, they worked together to draw homes. Once these are done they will plant seeds and make fences and put together a home with a garden all of their own. Big shout out to Stacey who collected over 40 plastic bottles for this project!
KinderBees and KinderWolves went on a bus! We had a field trip to Vanier MuseoPark and learned all about an inner city sugar shack. There was also a concert by an incredibly engaging Frano Ontarian musician and hoop dancing too!
3 on 3 basketball is in full swing! The students are having lots of fun and their skills and gameplay are improving every week! 75 students from Churchill will be participating in the alternative tournament which is taking place at Summit Alternative on Tuesday, May 7th. Grades 3&4 will play separately from grades 5&6 and teams will be mixed with students from all 4 alternative schools.
The kinders in room 115 are on a time-traveling adventure! On the last day of March they celebrated a very memorable Medieval Feast complete with a parade through the village-gracing the great unwashed with their edifying and regal presence wherever they went. They sat down to a sumptuous meal of chicken, exotic fruit from distant climes and a variety of dishes laced with spices from the Silk Road that only the richest and noblest castle kitchens could afford. There were a number of hounds waiting anxiously for the scraps tossed on the floor and many peasants were afforded the privilege of serving and cleaning up after the meal!
This past week, they sped through time and traveled ahead, well over a millennium, in order to watch the announcement of the crew of Artemis II, the exciting space flight slated for late 2024. The budding engineers are now in the process of turning our medieval Great Hall into a state of the art Canadian Space Agency think tank and design laboratory. (All donations of duct tape and aluminum foil gratefully accepted). To Infinity and beyond!
The Owls are learning about the writing process and narrative forms of writing - focusing on Fairy Tales and Twisted Fairy Tales. Students have been creating hard-cover-picture fairy tale books.
In Science, they are exploring simple machines, while building catapults.
The owls are also preparing a Bird Dance which will be presented at our Earth Day sharing on April 18.
The Dolphin and Ranger came together to create a unique strength chain, intertwining their diverse abilities and talents. Inspired by a video highlighting the beauty of diversity and the varied ways in which individuals learn, the students engaged in meaningful discussions about their strengths and areas for improvement. They created the strength chain with strips of paper, where each student wrote down their strengths and connected them to create a large chain, symbolizing their unity and support for one another. As they celebrated their unique attributes and emphasized the importance of embracing differences, the strength chain became a tangible representation of their inclusive and compassionate community. The strength chain is displayed in the front office where other classes are welcome to add to it whenever!
