September 2023 Monthly Update

Churchill news from September 2023!

Every month, our school council (CASC) meets to discuss events, fundraising, and other school-related items. As part of the meeting, our teacher representative provides an update on some of the events that occur in the school.   In addition, our principal sends out a weekly email which often includes a bit of information about what's happening around the school. While this post does not capture every event that happened this month, it does provide some highlights as shared by our staff.

Welcome Back to School Breakfast

What an incredible Welcome Back to School breakfast. It was wonderful to see so many families, listen to our Junior students play the Ukulele and listen to the words of Elder Monique Manatch. Thank you to everyone involved in organizing this event.

Yarn Club

Yarn Club is up and running. Last week, we had about 45 participants join us to finger knit, make pom poms, loom knit and needle knit. Thank you to Julie, Krista, and Caitlin for quickly getting us off the ground. We will meet every Wednesday in the library at second recess.

Music Clubs

Music clubs are up and running! Primary and Junior Ukulele clubs, as well as guitar club have been very well attended with the first “showcase” being performed at the Back to School Breakfast.

Run, Run, Run!

Optional cross country running for students in grades 3-6 happens every Monday and Wednesday morning,  rain or shine, before school at Dovercourt until the regional meet on October 3rd at the Terry Fox Stadium. Churchill adopts a “beat your best” theme at the meet instead of focusing on race placement.

We also have regular Churchill morning runs for all Grade 1-6 classes. They take place at the very start of the day with students running on school property.

At the end of the month, we participated in the annual Terry Fox Run.  If you want to read about Churchill's participation, check out this blog post.  This year we raised $3315.40!

Creativity Up and Running

The Art Room is ready for all classes to use! From Kinders to grade 6’s, students can use this space for all creative activities. Also, the room can be multipurpose, for science experiments, etc. In the Art Room, you will find it is broken up into stations so it’s easy to find materials. We have the following stations: Printing, Felting, Craft, Creation, Paper, Paint, Everything under the kitchen sink, Painting tools, Drawing tools, Clay, Trays, and Printing Stations. Everything that is needed for your imagination! The Art Club will also be running in this space. Desperately needed are styrofoam trays that have no markings, please.

Primary Colour Day in the Kinder Room

The kindergarten Bumblebees have had a terrific start to the year! We celebrated our first special day on Friday: Primary Colour Day. We wore red, yellow and blue, made super cool hats, had a special fashion show and colour hunt and ended the day with an awesome Cat Party. (Cat parties are a Friday afternoon tradition in our hive. )We’re not sure how bees are connected to cats, but any excuse for a party will do.)

Fox Trot

On Saturday, September 16 the Grade 1 Foxes went for a forest walk. Eleven Foxes (and 4 former Foxes) showed up with their families and enjoyed the early fall weather!

Tennis

All Junior students had the opportunity to take a lesson at Elmdale Tennis Club.

Dancemania is back!
