Churchill news from November 2023!
Every month, our school council (CASC) meets to discuss events, fundraising, and other school-related items. As part of the meeting, our teacher representative provides an update on some of the events that occur in the school. In addition, our principal sends out a weekly email which often includes a bit of information about what's happening around the school. While this post does not capture every event that happened in this month, it does provide some highlights as shared by our staff.
The Pond
The school has a new gross motor skills room called The Pond (RM. 205) which will be used by many students in our school community for physical body breaks, occupational therapy exercises and physiotherapy exercises.
Intramurals
Bordenball intramurals are well underway; the students are showing wonderful sportsmanship, working hard, and having fun! The Alternative Bordenball is scheduled for December 5th at Summit Alternative. More information will be coming at the end of the week!
Making Land Acknowledgments with Buddies
Two buddy classes were lucky enough to have Kyrstin Dumont come in to speak with the children and help us write our own land acknowledgements in our own words. Kyrstin was incredibly welcoming, and knowledgeable and shared her thoughts and ideas with the students. Since her visit, the children have written their acknowledgements and we will be reading them throughout the week on the announcements.
Prof du jour
One of our classes has been loving the wheel of names picking "le prof du jour" each day. "Le prof du jour" gets to ask a series of questions in French using the all-powerful hand to choose a child who will answer the question. They have been working on incorporating science vocabulary into their French lessons, and are now working on a health unit in French with the end goal of making recipes to share and presenting a mini skit of a restaurant scene.
Kinder Wolves Fun
There is not enough room for all of the things the wolves (kindergarten) have been up to. Halloween was a massive hit, bringing in pumpkins, carving and painting them, guessing and counting how many seeds were inside a pie pumpkin, cooking the pie pumpkin and then making pumpkin pancakes that were oh-so delicious. Many parents have been volunteering and joining us in the classroom, doing fun activities like being a very hungry adult needing to order a gazillion pizzas from our dramatic play center, or tracing children and using non-standard units of measurement to see how tall they were. When the first real snow came, many of us made snowballs and threw them against the wall and then estimated how high up the highest snowball was. We have been loving back to nature and taking our clipboards and pencils to make observations, along with hilarious cartoons. And Erika and Dorcas have been leading us on many wonderings, turning our little changemakers into mini scientists. Wolf pack snack is in full effect and parents have been bringing in such wonderful and curious foods for our little mouths to try. Persimmon was a huge hit. And last but not least, mystery reader is in full swing! Parents sign up and give us three clues. We have a week to try and guess who our mystery reader might be. Then they show up (and sometimes even in a penguin costume) with a read-aloud for our wolf den.
Remembrance
This week of remembrance staff and students focused their learning and reflecting on the contributions of the brave people who serve and have served our country in times of war and conflict. On November 8th our school community recognized Indigenous Veteran’s Day in honour of Indigenous contributions to military service in Canada. On November 11th, Ray’s class led our school in a powerful, inspiring and thoughtful Remembrance Day Sharing. Thank you to members of our community for joining us in thoughtful reflection and to all of our students and staff for their creative arts contributions.
Holiday Support
Each year, we provide support to families in need through collecting gift cards and then sharing those back out to families. This year, classes also created the holiday cards that were sold support of of the gift card initiative. Here's a quick peak at a few of the cards.
Coffee House
The first Coffee House of this school year was an incredible experience for students and the school community alike. Thank you to all staff and parents who put together this fantastic event. Thank you to CASC for supporting the bake sale. We raised an incredible $565 that will be put towards our lower yard rejuvenation!
Tiiu's class works with the the University of Ottawa
This week Tiiu also had the opportunity to present to a group of students in the Bachelor of Education program at the University of Ottawa, sharing her expertise on effective teaching and planning in the Junior grades. Way to go, Tiiu!
Kindness
Kindness was the theme of this week and it was wonderful to see students from Tiiu’s class leading various initiatives including kind greetings, kindness cards and running recess games in the yard. Thank you, Yeti’s!
