Since the inception of the Kichi Sibi Winter Trail, Churchill teachers have been taking advantage of this amazing opportunity to get their classes out cross-country skiing. Churchill is very fortunate because the Kichi Sibi Winter Trail is only a 20-minute walk away from the school. Gear is provided through their "Skis for Schools program" which means every child can participate regardless if they have their own equipment or not.
Although trail conditions weren't great in 2024, master groomer Dave Adams groomed special trails for the Churchill classes. Also - Michelle Richardson (retired teacher and coordinator of the Skis for Schools program) provided lessons to each class!
In addition to this experience fitting into the Phys Ed curriculum (locomotion skills and manipulation skills), it's a great opportunity to get classes out and engaged in the community, as well as try something new and challenging (but fun!) for them. What a fantastic way for students to get exposure to one of Canada's great outdoor winter activities!
Here's a summary of the experience from Ray's 4/5 class:
Thanks to everyone who was able to come and help out with our trip to the K Trail. It was a smashing success. Sure, at times it looked like a bunch of spiders on ice...but overall there were lots of smiles and laughs, and we walked back to the school a bit tired, but happy for a great experience. Huge thanks to the Skis for Schools folks, Michelle Richardson, and Dave Adams (Groomer Dave), as well as Peter (Owen G's uncle!) for making our trail comfortable, setting us up with gear, delivering it, and helping us all along the way. What a great day!
Here is the chat GPT rap we programmed to talk about our trip to the K Trail..
Yo, listen up, let me tell you a tale,
'Bout grade 4 and 5 students, they never fail.
In Ottawa, Canada, where the snow's so bright,
They hit the slopes, ready to take flight.
Cross country skiing, their adventure begins,
Strapping on their skis, with determined grins.
Falling down a lot, but they don't mind,
Laughing it off, leaving worries behind.
In the sunshine, they glide through the snow,
With friends by their side, the good times flow.
Through ups and downs, they stick together,
Supporting each other, no matter the weather.
They may stumble and tumble, but they rise again,
Learning from mistakes, they won't refrain.
With every fall, they gain strength and grace,
Embracing challenges, at their own pace.
In Ottawa's winter wonderland, they find delight,
Creating memories, under the sun so bright.
Grade 4 and 5 students, a fearless crew,
Having fun on the snow, with friendships so true.
So let's raise a toast to these young champs,
Cross country skiing, they've got the amps.
Falling down, but getting up with a grin,
Living life to the fullest, let the adventures begin!
Here's Groomer Dave with Ray - one of our junior teachers at Churchill. Dave (the mastermind behind the Kichi Sibi Winter Trail) is quite the community leader in Kitchissippi. Turns out his kiddo attended Churchill!
