Last week a parent came in to share a lesson with Liza’s Grade 2/3 class about breadboards, electricity, and circuits.
The parent began by talking about safety around electricity and batteries, and that linking batteries together creates more power.
Then, the circuit boards came out.
To support their science experiment, each student created a ‘truth table’ to record what happened when they touched different combinations of buttons on the circuit boards. The students then ran the the experiments (pressing no buttons, button 1, button 2, and both buttons) and recorded the results (whether the light turned on or not).
The kids were enthralled and worked very hard to figure out how to turn on the lights.
They students learned what makes for a good science experiment, what problems can happen with science experiments, and that you need to complete circuits for electricity to flow.
One of Churchill’s 7 Alternative Tenets is a family & community-centered school environment and this is one of the exciting ways that that tenet looks in practice. It’s so exciting when parents bring their interests into the classroom to be a part of ouy students’ learning journey!
