Churchillian Newz (Newspaper Club)

Early in November, students Alice, Isabelle and Emmett came to Yuri, one of our amazing Core French Teachers, with a proposal that she start a club for journalists and editors. The original idea was to develop a newspaper that could be printed. However, after some discussion, everyone decided that an online format would be a greener option.

And so the newspaper club was formed! It’s open to grade 5 and 6 students; they get to sign up each month for a section of the paper that they would like to cover (e.g. sports, music, art, Kinder corner, library, interviewing staff members, and creative corner).

The students are excited to share their first issue at churchillannewz.blogspot.com (soon moving to a new Google site). Stories include “Tie Up Your Laces!” (a summary of the Bordenball Tournament on December 16, 2019); “What’s going on with Bob” (and other stories about the school library); and “Life Of An Avocado” (a fictional piece).

Students will put out an issue each month and would love to hear suggestions from parents as to what they’d like to know more about. They’re also excited that future editions will include French content including crosswords and word searches. Students encourage parents to use the newspaper as a conversation starter instead of the usual “so what did you do at school today?”.

The students have been very clear that they want Churchillian Newz to be a positive space for kids full of good news.

We hope you enjoy the read!
