This week in PE...
First of all...HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! I hope everyone had a great two weeks off for Winter Break! Now that we are back at school we started the year off by reviewing PE rules and expectations. With the remaining time of class on Monday & Tuesday, we played 2-way Castle Ball. Students were trying to throw a foam ball and knock down the other team's 3 hula hoop castles. This is one of our favorite PE games to play at NYOS right before and after breaks.
Kindergarten played a tag called called Toilet Tag before they learned about Castle Ball for the first time! When you are tagged, you turn into a toilet and have to get down on one knee and hold your arm out. Another player who has not yet been tagged must run over to you, and push your arm down (flush you) so you can turn back into a human!
On Thursday, all classes K-5 got to try a scooter relay race. A school donated these scooters to us so they are new for students to use this year! We taught everyone how to ride the scooter safely. For this game, one person would sit on the scooter and one person would stand behind them and push the student across the gym where bean bags were spread out. The student in the scooter had to grab one bean bag and bring it back to their team. Whoever collected the most bean bags was crowned winner of the round!
Since these scooters use your feet for control, unfortunately our kindergarten students were not tall enough to use them, so we used our square OG scooters with them! We still had a ton of fun and it is always good energy and fun when we bring out scooters of any kind!

This week in PE...
We had another short week for PE! Thursday was the APEX fun run for all grade levels. The APEX Fun Run took place during each grade levels PE time. It was super fun to team up with APEX and cheer on the kiddos as they ran laps through the obstacle course.
On Monday - Tuesday, we changed class jobs in PE. Then with remaining time we went outside and did stations with all grade levels.
On Wednesday 2nd-5th grade played a game called Flag Tag. The goal of flag tag is for your team to end up with the most flags! Everyone had to wear a colored velcro belt and have 2 flags stuck to each side. On the start signal, you could run anywhere and try to pull a flag off of someone's belt. If you lose both your flags you were OUT.

This week in PE...
It was a short week because of MLK Day. K-1st grade did stations. They had soccer station, jump rope station, hula hoop station, or scoop throwing station.
2nd-5th grade played Flag Tag. The goal of this game is to get as many flags as possible by grabbing them off of the belts of people on other color teams. This game uses running, chasing, dodging, and fleeing skills.
Sorry for the lack of variety of photos this week! I was really focused on refereeing the game so I kept forgetting to take more photos!!!

This week in PE...
HOLY Snow/Ice! I hope everyone stayed warm and safe on these two unexpected days off...
Since our week was shortened we played Castleball with grades 1st-5th grade.
Kindergarten played two different games. The first was called "Get Outta My House." Half of the students started in a hula hoop (the houses) the other half started outside of the hula hoops. On the start signal, the students without a house could walk up to anyone in a house and challenge them to rock, paper, scissors. If the player won they would yell "GET OUTTA MY HOUSE," and takeover the hula hoop. If they lost rock, paper, scissors, the other play would stay in the house and they would have to go challenge someone else.
Afterwards we played a game called Musical Hoops. It is like musical chairs but with hula hoops. On the start signal students would move around the gym doing a designated movement (skipping), when the music stops they had 5 seconds to try to get into a hula hoop. If you were not in a hula hoop you had to do 5 jumping jacks. Each round was a different movement!
