This week in PE we had a special guest visit!!!!! My Friend Mr. Nathan from Premiere Martial Arts came to all our PE classes and taught our students about the ABC's of success.
This Saturday October 12th his Premiere Martial Arts Studio is hosting a FREE party for NYOS students. Each child is bringing home a card with all the information about the event. At this event your child will have the opportunity to earn their white belt, break a wooden board, and eat free pizza.
If you are interested in attending this event you can call the phone number 737-205-4302 to let them know your child is coming! If you cannot make the event but you are interested in classes you can call the same number and let them know to schedule a different visiting day!
This week in PE...
1st grade through 5th grade had their DOJO Reward PE days. For classroom management this year we have implemented Class Dojos for each grade level to earn points for different categories such as good sportsmanship, treating PE equipment properly, staying on task, etc. Once they earn a certain amount of points they get to vote as a class on what they would like the special reward PE class to look like. For Q1 we offered all our classes to play a game called Flag Tag, Capture the Chicken (like capture the flag but we use rubber chickens because rubber chickens are cool), or Free Choice stations where they could pick some PE equipment to practice with such as (jump ropes, hula hoops, soccer balls, or velcro throwing).
In PE we see all of Elementary in just 2 days so Monday and Tuesday were the Dojo reward Days.
For Wednesday & Thursday... K-2nd played Treasure Grab to work on more relay race style games while 3rd-5th got to learn about the Fitnessgram Pacer Test and practice for the first time this year outside on the field.
To play flag tag we have 6 different colored teams (one for reach color of the rainbow so team (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple). Each team knows their homebase because it is marked by 4 cones making a box. Inside each team's box are two buckets that hold their velcro belts and matching team flags. Each player must have a belt visable with 2 flags hanging on each hip. The goal of this game is to pull ONE flag off of another colored team's belt. After you pull a flag you must bring it back to your team bucket before trying to get another flag. If you lose both of your flags you are OUT unless your team has extra flags that match your color. Then you can reload your belt and head back out. My FAVORITE RULE about flag tag is that there are NO SAFE SPOTS...so even if you are inside your cone base you can get your flag pulled😁 Rounds last about 2-3 minutes and whichever team has the most flags at the end of the round get a point!
The Pacer test is part of Fitnessgram state testing that we have to do in PE every year for grades 3rd-5th. It is a running aerobic capacity test that measures cardiovascular endurance. We like to practice the pacer test a few times during the year before we start official Fitnessgram testing at the end of the year! 🏃🏃🏃🏃🏃🏃🏃
This week in PE...
Kinder, First, and Second grade learned about underhand throwing! The three parts to underhand throwing are our STEP, SWING, AND THROW! To practice underhand throwing we took these grade levels outside to catch some Pokémon. All over the field were scattered Pokémon (Pokémon stickers stuck on cones) and each Pokémon sat inside of a hula hoop. Students were placed into relay teams and give one pokeball to throw. When the game started the first person from each team ran out with their pokeball, found a Pokémon of their choice, and tried to capture it by underhand throwing the pokeball and trying to land it in the hula hoop. If the pokeball landed in the hula hoop, the Pokémon was captured and the student got to bring it back to their team!
For grades 3rd-5th we worked on under and overhand throwing by playing a game called Perfect Pass. During this game one student one would run down the field and stand inside of any available hula hoop. One teammate would bring a ball and look for their teammate in the hula hoop. From behind a marked line the student would throw the ball to their teammate in the hula hoop. If the student catches the ball, they get to take the hula hoop back to their team. We say "if you make it you take it!" If the ball is not caught the hula hoop would stay. Whichever team has the most hula hoops wins!
This week in PE...
All grade levels K-5th got to participate in our annual PE SpOokY Games! We play a game I have created called Pumpkin Patch. This is a relay race style game. Each team has their own spooky item they are searching for in the pumpkin patch (such as a bat, rat, candy corn, witch finger, skeleton head, etc.). All spooky items are hidden under plastic pumpkins out in the pumpkin patch. When it is the student's turn, they run out to the pumpkin patch and flip over one pumpkin to see what is underneath. If it matches the spooky item their team has they take it back to their team. In order to win your team has to find 6 total of your spooky item!
As the rounds go on...I hide mystery spooky items that mean different things if you find them!
For example:
1. If a white ghosty ball is found...your team can count it as one of your items!
2. If the golden spider is found...you can take one item from another team and count that item as your own item!
