10/4/22

Good afternoon, good people. How's it going? I received some bad news today, but that's okay. I am a big boy and can take it. Hopefully all of the news that you are receiving is muy bien.

To start the day, we read for fifteen minutes.

Next, we began talking about complex sentences.

  • First, students wrote an independent clause.

  • Then, they put a dependent clause after their independent clause to create a complex sentence.

  • Afterwards, they created another dependent clause.

  • Following that, they dropped a comma after the dependent clause and added another independent clause.

  • To end, students wrote two complex sentences with the dependent clause first and two with the independent clause first, and I walked around and checked everyone's work.

Overall, students did very well. I was impressed. This shouldn't be too hard, but the thing to remember is that if the dependent clause comes before the independent, add a comma, and if the independent clause comes before the dependent, don't add a comma.

For the final segment of class, I created a Venn Diagram looking at the similarities and differences in The Fall of the House of Usher and House Taken Over. I think the students were surprised to see how much the two stories have in common. After finishing the diagram, students turned to page 33 and began the Analyze Craft and Structure assignment. Anything not finished in class must be completed before the period begins on Thursday.
