Recently students enjoyed Book Week - to promote reading, many students came dressed as their favourite literary characters. Secondary students were also given an opportunity to read to the Primary classes.
Last week our students participated in the Literary Competition at the International Pakistan School and won 2nd Prize.
During Term 1 Year 7 students studied Kensuke's Kingdom as a part of English. Students explored themes and language features building on wider concepts.
During Term 1 Year 8 students gained knowledge on poetic devices and lyrical features of a song. They explored various themes and linguistic features of a variety of poems.
Students have read these books to explore themes, extend language and develop skills in analysis and evaluation.
During Term 1 students have completed their first Coursework assignment : Descriptive Writing and worked towards skills for Paper 1 : Reading
Year 7 - Studying wonderful poetry by Roald Dahl
Year 8 - Persuasive Writing : creating leaflets - advertisements etc
Year 9 - Persuasive Writing: speeches
Year 10 First Language classes working on (course work 2) (Response Letter). Would be helpful to look at a variety of controversial articles and elicit responses from your teenagers.
Year 10 Second Language : Working on (speaking and listening). Listening to current news on (bbc news) spoken in Standard English, will help greatly.
Year 11 First Language to be set individual targets after mock exam results to address stretch areas. Work on individual skills.
Year 11 Second Language - also to work on individual stretch areas identified from the mock exams.
Students have been given an opportunity to address weaker points highlighted in their mock exams and individual targets set to address these.
Year 7 have produced wonderful War Poetry increasing their emotional and patriotic development.
Year 8 have read the The Wind Singer : a great book with themes of (friendship, teamwork, good vs evil and conformity.
Year 9 have studied the themes of Lord of the Flies - a book teaching the value of civilization.
Year 10 completed their coursework assignment on responding to text. They responded to a highly controversial article. Some fantastic responses were produced demonstrating skills of emotive writing and writing to suit a particular audience.
English as Second Language IGCSE : completed their actual Speaking exams. They went well for all students.
Year 11 have had their mocks this month and many have demonstrated a marked improvement in grades.
English Literature students have been studying the drama : An Inspector Calls with some impressive dramatic enthusiasm to build confidence in speaking in public.
Year 12 completed their March mocks and it was encouraging to see all the students grades improve considerably. They have studied : A Thousand Splendid Suns - the themes ranging from : courage vs cowardice, betrayal, endurance, redemption. Many literary techniques have been developed this month.
