NHS Policy regarding Online Learning and Placement Travel Expenses
Dear Students,
RE: NHS Policy regarding Online Learning and Placement Travel Expenses
Over the course of the pandemic, we had been informed by the NHS Business Services Authority that, due to remote learning, when calculating the cost of placement travel, the University travel was deemed to be zero, and therefore students were entitled to the full cost of travel whilst on placement.
Unfortunately, we have been informed by the NHS that this advice was in fact incorrect. Please see below the clarification regarding this, received by the Placement Support Services Team on 6th May:
“The rules as they stand are students must confirm their daily return costs to university regardless of whether they are studying from home or not. This daily cost will then be used against their daily return cost to placement and any excess costs will be duly reimbursed. Students may argue that we only attend/ connect to university studies 1 or 2 days per week and therefore that is the amount that should be deducted. That is not the case as we must deduct the daily return cost to university for each daily journey to placement.”
As the original incorrect advice was from the NHS Business Services Authority, they have stated that the deduction of university travel rule must be applied to all claims received following the date of the above clarification being received (6/5/22 onwards)
In relation to this, it has been brought to our attention that students have been advised that, due to remote working, they are to state that their normal place of study is their term-time address. Again, this is not the case. As students are enrolled at Sheffield Hallam University, and based at Collegiate campus, the address which must be used as the usual place of study must be the address of the Collegiate Campus, regardless of whether students are studying remotely or in person. Again, this is advice we have been given from the NHS Business Services Authority and therefore we must abide by it accordingly.
We trust that this clarifies the situation further. If you do have any further queries regarding travel expenses, the current University guidance regarding claiming is available on the Placements Website for your course and can also be accessed via the following link here. Further Guidance is available at the NHS Business Services Authority Learning Support Fund site here.
Kindest Regards,
Placement Support Services
Dear Students
My name is Ian Thistlewood and I am in my final year of the MSc Physiotherapy course. As part of my dissertation I am exploring Physiotherapy Students attitudes towards obesity and the impact that obesity can have in therapy involvement. If you are a BSc or MSc Pre-reg Physiotherapy student you are eligible for my study.
I would really appreciate you sparing five minutes to complete my questionnaire.

Thank you for your help.

MSc Physiotherapy student.
My dissertation student is looking for help exploring the role of the practice-based learning coaches who have supported you on your placements recently. Please take some time to read the following and contact Sonal directly if you are interested!
Many thanks,
Sophie Gilhooly
Hello,
My name is Sonal Mer. I am a Msc physiotherapy student studying at Sheffield Hallam University currently doing my dissertation. My dissertation topic is “Physiotherapy students experience of the introduction of Practice based Learning coaches on their experiences of placement”.
The aim of the study is to evaluate the practice-based learning coach role for BSc physiotherapy students on placement. This role is new and so there is no existing evidence about how this role may be beneficial to you as students. This will help us to develop a support model which will facilitate the delivery of placements in the future. The study will involve a focus group discussion which will take a maximum of one hour of your time and light refreshments will be provided.
If you would like to contribute to this study, have a read of the Participant information sheet and Consent Form here. If you agree to participate in the study, please contact me directly on the following email address c0030625@my.shu.ac.uk with the date and time that suits you best. The times for the focus groups are below. Your participation is completely voluntary.
Thank you!
Sonal Mer
Many of you have asked about what support is available when your performance in an assessment has been affected by something extenuating or if you are struggling to meet submission deadlines for various reasons. If you aren't sure what a RRAA or RESD are click on the links which will explain. Your AA and Student Support Adviser can help to provide advice on these processes if you need to use them or if you aren't sure. Getting in touch early to seek advice is helpful.
Over the last few months the team have been involved in a number of Academic Conduct meetings with students. This is not uncommon for written work but highlights that students may need support with their academic writing. Please make sure you understand the Academic Conduct Rules and how to apply these in your assessments. The library have some fantastic resources on referencing and how to ensure you are not plagiarising others work. Please check out their online study skills resources here. The module blackboard sites have information specific to the assessment and usually there are formative opportunities to get feedback on your draft plans/assignments. Please use the guidance on turnitin. You should be aiming to submit to turnitin before the deadline so you can check your submission originality and amend/change/rewrite sections if they flag up on your originality report. You don't need to submit front sheets, references or appendices to turnitin as this usually inflates your score. Just submit the main body of your assignment. The library team are on hand to help proof read your work and you can also ask your Academic advisor for general support. Don't forget that academic writing and referencing is a skill and is really tricky to get right at first. Once you have it becomes much easier.
Here is a short video on how to paraphrase to help you avoid copying work or using too many direct quotations.
