Instructional Strategies

• Ask students to name numbers that are less than or greater than a given number.
• Students represent their numbers using the place value chart, concrete manipulatives and blackline master copies in order to write the large number in expanded form.

Learning Tasks:

Task 1

Expanded Form

• Ask students to show numbers in expanded form on the place value chart and to write the corresponding number in words.

Task 2

Place Value Money

• Explore large numbers using money contexts and ask students to represent their cash amounts in usual and expanded form.

Task 3

Budget Spending

• Invite students to “spend” a given amount of money using six-digit numbers. Discuss their proposed budget. How do they break numbers into manageable units? How do they manage their ‘spending’?

Assessment

Task 1

Provide students with dice to roll six digits. Ask students to arrange the digits on the place value chart to make the largest number possible and then the smallest number possible. Ask students to represent their number using base 10 materials and blackline master copies. Ask students to write the expanded form of the number and the corresponding number in words.

Task 2

Given a number in expanded form (five or six digits), ask students to represent the amount using base ten blocks on the place value chart and black line master copies on the place value chart and write the number in usual form and in words.
