Manipulative:

1. 100 Number Charts
2. Plus Minus Ten Frames
3. Number cards

Instructional Strategies

• Use 100 number chart to sort and order 2 digit numbers. Make a Plus ten-minus ten frame (See Materials) to lay over the digits on the 100 chart. Frame shows plus ten (below), minus ten (above), plus one (right) and minus one (left).
• Use number cards for sorting and seriating numbers

Learning Tasks:

Task 1

• 100 Number Charts: Use foam dice or counters to ‘land’ on a variety of numbers. Ask students to name numbers, say one more than, one less than, ten more than, ten less than.

Assessment

Task 1

Give student a selection of unsorted numeral cards. Ask the student to organize the numbers into the correct sequence.

Task 2

• Give students a selection of unsorted numeral cards. Ask students what number is 10 more than a selected number. Ask students what number is 10 less than a selected number. Ask, “How do you know?” Encourage students to use a place value chart and/or provide one if necessary to support students.
