Instructional Strategies

• Ask students to name numbers that are less than or greater than a given number. Students represent their numbers using the place value chart and concrete manipulative in order to write the large number in expanded form.

Learning Tasks:

Task 1

• Ask students to show numbers in expanded form on the place value chart and to write the corresponding number in words.

Task 2

• Explore large numbers using money contexts and ask students to represent their cash amounts in usual and expanded form.

Assessment

Task 1

Provide students with dice to roll four digits. Ask students to arrange the digits on the place value chart to make the largest number possible and then the smallest number possible. Ask students to represent their number using base ten material. Ask students to write the expanded form of the number and the corresponding number in words.

Task 2

Given a number in expanded form (four or five digits), ask students to represent the amount using base ten blocks on the place value chart and write the number in usual form and in words.
