Use number cards 0-9. Shuffle the cards and have each student select five. Students make the greatest (or least) possible number. Determine who has the greatest (or least) number of all. Ask: how far from the greatest (least) number are you? How can you rearrange the cards to make a greater (lesser) number? What digits would you want in order to have the greatest difference between the greatest and the least number?
Ask students to say the number sequence from any two given numbers with nine or ten digits. Listen for accuracy and fluency.
Ask students to model any two given numbers in the billion decade with base ten material or pictorials on the place value chart. Ask students to count the numbers in between and model with the blocks or pictures if necessary.
