Recognize meaning of zero: Zero as having nothing
The link below is an animated video that describes the meaning of zero:
Identify vocabulary for zero
Count Down to Zero: Line up counters on the number line and remove them one at a time as students count leaving nothing when they get to zero.
Filling the Void: Explore the concept of nothing by challenging students to represent zero with counters.
Zip Zero Zilch: Create simple stories that illustrate ‘nothing left’ or ‘empty set’. E.g., flock of parrots leaving a tree empty, no leftovers after supper.
Put numeral cards 0 to 10 on the table.
• Ask the student to use counters to model the number on each numeral card.
Give the student a sheet of paper with numbers 0 to 5.
• Ask the student to make x’s in each column to show what size group the numeral represents.
Observation:
Ask the student what he/she needs to do to complete the “0” box?
