Nouns - Region, Shape or Set of objects
Verbs - Compose and Decompose
Short Description:
Students must be able to:
• Pattern blocks
• Discrete set models: counters, blocks, cookies, etc.
• Region models: fruit, cake, pizza, candy bar, etc.
• Help students construct the idea of fractional parts of the whole when the whole has been portioned into equal-sized portions or fair shares.
• Use sharing tasks to distribute a whole fairly among recipients.
• Vary the whole as discrete sets (e.g., counters, blocks, cookies, jelly beans, pieces of gum, etc.) and regions of different shapes such as rectangles or circle (e.g., cookies, sandwiches, pizzas, crackers, cake, candy bars, etc.)
• Region Model Story: Write simple story problems that require students to share a region model equally among recipients e.g., suppose there are four square cakes to be shared among three children so that each child gets the same amount. How much (or show how much) will each child get?
• Set Model Story: Write simple story problem that require students to share a discrete set model equally among recipients e.g., Suppose there are nine cookies to be shared equally among three children so that each child gets the same amount. How much (or show how much) will each child get?
• Pattern Design: Ask students to create a ‘whole’ pattern using similar pattern blocks. Discuss the ‘parts’ of the whole as a class as each student demonstrates the design.
• Fruit Salad: Model the equal partitioning of different fruits in different ways with students.
• Ask the student to make the shape using smaller equal size pieces.
• Can the student place equivalent shapes together to create a whole hexagon? Is the student able to explain how many of each shape it takes to create a whole hexagon? For example 2 of the red shape pieces make a whole hexagon; 3 of the blue shape pieces make a whole hexagon.
