Nature Storytelling with Discovery
Year 4 enjoyed a creative and hands-on workshop with Discovery this week, exploring the power of storytelling through nature.
The children began by drawing images on stones, then worked in groups to create and share imaginative, nature-inspired stories. Using sticks, leaves, and other natural materials, they also built miniature shelters, learning about structure, teamwork, and the natural world.
To finish, they explored the Japanese art of Hapa-zome—a technique where leaves and flowers are placed between fabric and gently hammered to create beautiful, natural prints. The children loved seeing the vibrant colours and shapes come to life on the fabric.
It was a fantastic day of creativity, outdoor learning, and connection with nature. Thank you to Discovery for such a memorable experience!
Year 4 Get Active at the University of East London
This week, Year 4 had an exciting trip to the University of East London, where they took part in a range of fun and challenging sports activities.
The children tried their hand at rowing, skipping, basketball, and even boxing, learning new skills and pushing themselves to try something different. The university’s facilities gave them a real taste of what it’s like to train like an athlete!
It was a fantastic day full of energy, teamwork, and confidence-building. Well done to all the pupils for giving it their all—and thank you to UEL for such a brilliant experience!
Green School Project
Year 4 had an inspiring workshop this week with The Green Schools Project, where they learned about green jobs of the future and how they can help tackle climate change. Children explored a range of eco-friendly careers and then put their creativity to work by designing their own low carbon meals, focusing on local, seasonal ingredients and reducing food waste. It was a fun and thoughtful session that helped our students see how their choices—now and in the future—can make a real difference for the planet. A big thank you to The Green Schools Project!
Pasta Making Workshop
Year 4 had a fantastic time this week during a hands-on pasta-making workshop! The day began with a fun lesson on the history of pasta. The children learned where pasta came from, how it was first made, and discovered the meanings behind different pasta names — like farfalle, which means butterflies in Italian! Next, the class got to make their own pasta from scratch. They mixed, rolled, and shaped dough into spaghetti, tagliatelle, and even some creative new shapes. There was flour everywhere — and lots of laughter! To finish, everyone took part in a tasting session, trying freshly cooked pasta with delicious sauces. It was a big hit, and many children said it was their favourite workshop yet!
Well done, Year 4 — brilliant chefs and pasta pros in the making!
Food for Thought
Year 4 took a trip to the local supermarket to explore where our food comes from as part of our “Food For Thought” topic. We looked closely at food labels to find the country of origin—spotting bananas from Colombia, rice from Thailand, and grapes from South Africa! It helped us understand how far food travels and the impact of food miles.
We also discovered Fair Trade products like chocolate, bananas, and coffee. We learned that Fair Trade ensures farmers are paid fairly and work in safe conditions, helping communities around the world.
The trip taught us how to be thoughtful shoppers by checking labels and choosing Fair Trade when we can. It was a fun and eye-opening experience that turned a simple supermarket visit into a valuable lesson about global food and fairness.
