Home Learning Projects
In an exciting showcase of creativity and knowledge, children have embarked on home learning projects that delve into two captivating topics: the Roman Empire and volcanoes. These projects reflect not only their understanding of the subjects but also their ability to apply various skills acquired in the classroom and through independent research.
Easter experience
Year 4 embarked on a creative journey at St Johns Church Name. The day consisted of engaging art workshop where children create Easter-themed crafts that reflect the joy and hope of the season. Guided by skilled instructors, they learnt about the symbols associated with Easter, like the egg, which represents new life and resurrection, and the cross, signifying sacrifice and hope.
Comic Relief
We celebrated Comic Relief's 40th anniversary by hosting Red Nose Day events. Children enthusiastically participated by dressing up in retro clothes, reflecting styles from the 1980s to the 2010s. This nostalgic theme not only added a fun twist to the day but also served as a creative fundraising initiative. Children and teachers alike embraced the opportunity to wear vibrant outfits and each classed danced to a song from different eras. These activities contributed to raising awareness and funds for Comic Relief's mission to support vulnerable communities worldwide.
Science day
Year 4 had an exciting and hands-on Science Day, exploring different scientific concepts through fun experiments! First, in Should We Flush It Away?, children investigated which materials break down in water and which do not. They filled bottles halfway with water, added different materials like kitchen towel and wipes, then shook the bottle to observe what happened. This helped them understand the impact of flushing non-biodegradable items.
Next, they became chemists in Making Bath Bombs! Using ingredients like vegetable oil, food colouring, and cupcake cases, they created their own bath bombs. They discovered that when a bath bomb is placed in water, it fizzes and releases gas—an example of an irreversible reaction where new materials are formed.
To finish the day, they put their creativity to the test by designing posters for an exciting challenge: to invent a way to improve air quality in an indoor space. They came up with innovative ideas and presented their solutions using eye-catching designs. It was a fantastic day of discovery, problem-solving, and fun!
Natural History Museum
Year 4 had an exciting and educational trip to the Natural History Museum to learn all about earthquakes and volcanoes. The day was filled with fun activities, hands-on experiences, and fascinating facts!
We explored different types of volcanoes and even saw a model of an erupting volcano. It was amazing to see how magma rises to the surface and erupts as lava. We discovered that some volcanoes are active, some are dormant, and others are extinct. Our guide explained how volcanic eruptions can shape landscapes and even create new islands!
World Book Day
The school playground transformed into a magical world of stories and imagination as children celebrated World Book Day with a spectacular costume parade! Excitement buzzed in the air as young readers arrived dressed as their favorite book characters, bringing beloved tales to life.
From Harry Potter to Matilda, The Gruffalo to Alice in Wonderland, the creativity on display was inspiring. Pirates, princesses, wizards, and even a few mischievous villains marched proudly, showcasing their colorful costumes. Each outfit told a unique story, reflecting the children's love for reading and their favorite fictional worlds.
Nutrition Workshop
This week, our Year 4 class took part in an exciting and educational nutrition workshop, where they explored the world of healthy eating, learned essential cooking skills, and even took home a delicious surprise!
The session began with an interactive discussion about the different food groups. The children eagerly shared their knowledge and were introduced to the importance of a balanced diet. They discovered how fruits and vegetables provide vitamins and minerals, proteins help build muscles, carbohydrates give us energy, and dairy products support strong bones. It was fantastic to see them so engaged and eager to learn!
Next, the hands-on fun began! The children had the opportunity to prepare fresh vegetables, using different kitchen tools safely and effectively. Under careful supervision, they learned how to peel, chop, and grate a variety of vegetables. There was plenty of excitement as they mastered these new skills, with many proudly showing off their neatly cut carrots and peppers!
To top off the experience, each child received a special goody bag filled with everything they needed to make their own delicious and nutritious noodles at home. Inside the bag were fresh vegetables, noodles, and a simple recipe to follow with their families. The children left the workshop buzzing with excitement, eager to share their new skills and knowledge with their loved ones.
A massive thank you to Itsu for delivering such an amazing workshop.
SCIENCE
Have you ever wondered how clouds form or why your bathroom mirror fogs up after a hot shower? Year 4, did an exciting science experiment to learn about condensation using simple items found at home. We used:
A glass jar
Boiling water
A plate
Ice cubes
First, we poured some boiling water into the glass jar. The heat from the water filled the jar with steam.
Then, we quickly placed a plate over the top of the jar to trap the steam inside.
Next, we put several ice cubes on the plate and waited a few moments.
We observed that tiny water droplets started forming on the underside of the plate!
Descriptive writing
Over the last couple of weeks, we been learning all about the weather and how to make our writing more exciting and vivid. We’ve explored different types of sentences, used fronted adverbials to add flair, and even experimented with figurative language like similes and personification. We put it all together to create weather descriptions that are so good, readers will feel like they’re standing right in it! To end the week we even painted our descriptions using water colours.
Green Schools Project
We started the year off with the hum of excitement as Year 4 embarked on an inspiring journey to learn about saving the planet from carbon emissions. With climate change becoming a pressing issue, the class took on the challenge of understanding their role in protecting the Earth and how small changes can lead to big impacts. The class will continue the project for the rest of the year. So watch this space for updates.
