In maths, we have begun learning about volume and capacity. We took our learning outside, using various containers, water and cups to investigate how much each container could hold.
We also used beakers of water in the classroom and our mathematical vocabulary to describe the volume of water in each container.

As one of our Manor Memorable Moments, we chose to grow our own plants. We used cress as we knew this grew quickly and we were keen to taste a vegetable that we grew ourselves. We reminded ourselves of our science work on plants from earlier in the year, discussing what our plants will need in order to grow. We made sure to give them soil and plenty of water and sunlight. We hope they will grow quickly!
We were able to combine our learning on plants with National Upcycling Day. Instead of plant pots, we reused containers from our classroom recycling bins, giving them a new and creative purpose.
We used cardboard, which means they will decompose when planted into the ground so they will not end up in landfill in the end as well.

This week, as a school we have been learning about Windrush Day. In Year 1 we learnt through stories about the people who came to Britain during the Windrush Generation and the impact they made on our country. We also enjoyed looking at Caribbean art and artists. We used repeating patterns to create our own artwork. As well as this, we learnt about Caribbean music and learnt a traditional song which we performed to Year 4. It was a fantastic day of learning!

In computing, we have begun using the iPads to create our own cartoons. Today we 'tinkered' with the new technology to see what we could do. We explored what was possible with the app and began to generate ideas on how we might create our own cartoons and tell a story using movement and narration.

In science, we have been investigating the properties of materials. This week we tested to see which materials would be best for an umbrella or rain coat. We wanted to know which was the most waterproof material. To find out we tested different pieces of material by adding drops of water until the water got through. We put our investigation into a real world context by throwing wet sponges at Mr Fortune to see which of his coats would be best to keep him dry in the rain. It was a lot of fun!

This week we continued our work on Recycling in Action. After our trip to the Aquarium we realised how much plastic gets used once then thrown away. We wanted to see how we did. So as a class we checked our water bottles to see how many where made o single-use plastic and how many were reusable. We recorder our results in a tally chart and a bar graph to make them easier for others to see.
