Year 1 were very lucky to be invited to Highway Vineyard Church to help us with our learning in RE. We have been looking at how Christians celebrate at Christmas and being able to go to a real church was a great way to help cement the learning we have been going in class. We went round in different groups and got to find out about why Christians celebrate a Christmas and how they celebrate in modern times.

This week Year 1 travelled through London to visit Buckingham Palace. In our English lessons we have been reading a story called The Queen's Hat. In it we meet the Queen and her royal guards as they chase a hat through London. We were so interested that we decided to go to Buckingham Palace and see the guard for ourselves. We had a fantastic time and got the see the guards marching, as well as talking to a police inspector who told us all about where the guards go when they march around the palace.

To help us with our learning about plants we have had the chance to plant seeds. We used special greenhouses which attach to the window in our classroom to grow seeds. Mr Fortune would not tell us what kind of seeds they were so we had to make a scientific prediction about what they might look like. After we made our prediction we planted them on cotton wool to keep them warm, gave them some water and hung them up so they would get plenty of sunlight.
We are really excited to see what they grow into!

This week is Anti-Bully Week and we have been showing our support by wearing odd socks. We also had some time in class to think about being kind and how just one kind word can make a huge difference to someone. We spoke about ways we can be kind to our family, friends and even people we just met. We should be kind to everyone and show kindness whenever we can.
We also learnt that kindness should not just be for other but also ourselves. You should be kind to yourself and make sure you are feeling happy and positive so that you can share those feelings with others.

This week the whole school took part in a virtual live lesson to create their own junk-bot robots out of recycled materials. We had an amazing time choosing our materials and using them to create our very own robots. Each of our robots is different and does different things.
We learnt about using recycled materials and how they can be given a new life if we use our imagination and creativity.

This week we began looking at our new book The Queen's Hat by Steve Antony. We are following the adventure of Queen Elizabeth and she and her guards search London for her missing hat.
We wondered how easy it would be for the wind to blow someones hat off their head. So we did an experiment! We took turns to wear different types of hats and Mr Fortune and Miss Dempsey used hair dryers to try and blow them off out heads. It was lots of FUN!
