We hope you all had a good holiday. The children have come back with lots of enthusiasm and energy. This term our topic is 'Transport'. We began with thinking about all the different transport we knew and made lots of chalk drawing outside in the playground. The boys were very interested in how the hot air balloon worked so we looked on the computer to find out. Over the next few weeks we will look at different modes of transport that the children are interested in as well as looking at some transport from the past and comparing them with transport of today.
This week we have begun reading 'The Naughty Bus' by Jan and Jerry Oke. W During their free play the children have made buses by cutting and sticking shapes and have painted some excellent representations of buses. We had a new bus in our transport box which proved very popular and we used the wooden blocks to create roads.
This week we have continued our on the book 'The Naughty Bus' by Jan and Jerry Oke. the children have been busy making vehicles with various construction equipment. They made a very impressive bus outside in the garden with the large blocks. We have also been using our imagination to go on many journeys in our Taxi.
We have had great fun with the remote control cars, making our own pathways to challenge our driving skills. On the creative table we have been driving our cars through paint to create lots of wheel patterns. During Literacy we took photographs of our 'Naughty Bus' in the environment and then wrote about where our bus had travelled to.
May Day and Polling Day has meant we have had a short week. The children have been showing lots interest in Ramadan so we have been learning how Muslim people celebrate and comparing the similarities and differences with other festivals such as Christmas. The children have made star and moon mobiles and have decorated mendhi hands and prayer mats.
In maths we have been revisiting 2D and 3D shapes. We have used lolly sticks to build shapes and we went on a shape walk outside in the garden.
We have continued our work on transport by learning about boats. We have made lots of different representations using a variety of media.
Talking about the sea introduced the concept of floating and sinking. We looked at a variety of objects to find out which ones floated and which sank. We explored the objects further to discuss why some floated and others sank.
The children were very keen to find out about hot air balloons so we watched some information on youtube and then designed our own hot air balloons. We learnt the correct name for the balloon and how to make it rise and fall
The children were enjoying a chasing game involving being stuck in a lava flow so the adults set them the challenge of getting from one side of the playground to the other using the crates and without stepping in the lave. The children worked fantastically as a team and managed to get the whole length of the playground by moving crates from the back to the front in order to move forward. They were super pleased with their accomplishments once they reached the other side.
In literacy we made our own passports ready for our holidays.
This week we have had visitors to our classroom. Some from outer space and some virtual. We made lots of different representations of aliens during our work on space. We also had a virtual visit from a police officer. She told us how she helped people and we asked lots of questions about her equipment. The session inspired the children to build a jail for the 'bad guys ' with the blocks.
To conclude our work on transport we looked at lots of old transport. After our carpet session we then used magnifying glasses to look at old photos of our local area. To end our term we had a treat and made fruit ice lollies which were delicious.
