SPARX update

Congratulations to our Year 10 students for being the most improved for completing 100% on Sparx homework in the Trust.

It is very important that all our students continue to complete their Sparx homework 100% each week as this will help them close any gaps they have and regularly consolidate their learning in lessons.

On Wednesday  31st of January, approximately 30 Year 9 and  Year 10 students represented the Leigh Academy in this year's Intermediate Maths Challenge Competition.

In order to qualify for the competition the students must demonstrate the following attributes from the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) curriculum:

KNOWLEDGEABLE: Demonstrated through classroom discussions, homework tasks and classwork tasks, a high propensity to engage with problem solving questions that challenges one to think. They are not discouraged when mistakes are made and maintain focus to the end, i.e. when the problem is solved.

ENQUIRERS: Demonstrate passion for the subject of Mathematics and is always engaged in learning about how the subject is applicable to real life situations. Loves solving puzzles and engage in research without being prompted

RISK TAKERS: Not afraid of accepting a challenge and never gives up. This student is very resilient and never gives up.

BEING BALANCED AND PRINCIPLED: Being able to balance all the work they have to do at school and make time to complete the challenge in their own time in exam conditions

We had a total of 8 certificates! Maelis, Ehimen, Darius, Yousef and Amelia all received a bronze awards and Goda and Albert . received a silver award! This is a fantastic achievement at this level and this has no doubt paved the way for success in many endeavours in the future.

Congratulations to all the students who participated. You have no doubt made your school proud. Well done and we are looking forward to seeing all the positive benefits taking part in these challenges will no doubt have on your GCSE exams, university applications and job opportunities in the future.

Year 10 Maths Feast

Our very first LAT AMSP Maths Feast (Year 10) took place on 13th March at Ebbsfleet Academy. We selected four our Year 10 students for this event with Mrs. Sandhu. Our students came 5th out of 15 schools that participated, which was a great success as it was the first time for any of us to participate in this kind of event. There were four rounds called:

The Maths-Hatters, inspired by The Mad Hatter from Alice’s Adventures in

The Leigh Academy team comprised of

Students really enjoyed it there, especially making origami shapes at the end 😀. They also performed really well, so congratulations to them.

Can you work out the answers to these questions inspired by House of Cards where the

vowels have been removed?  (A single vowel word has been replaced by ?).
