Literacy and Reading

A round up of all the things literacy based that have been happening since December

World Book Day

At The Leigh Academy, we celebrate World Book Day  every year to promote a love of reading and showcase how wonderful and beneficial reading a variety of texts can be.

On Wednesday 28th February, our school celebrated WBD early, with Illustrator Kev F Sutherland who was involved in a workshop with some of our students.

During the session, the students had produced a comic containing a strip by every single one of them (a copy of which they took home) plus a caricature of each student!

It was an incredibly informative day with students learning new skills on how to draw with hints and tips along the way, which helped give the students confidence to draw.  It also helped highlight our WBD theme this year of Graphic novels, Comics and Manga.

A great day was had by all!

Library Activities

During the week of WBD we had 3 days of exciting and engaging activities in the library. One hundred students were treated to an opportunity of creating their own Manga and Comic keyring with designs already printed for them to choose. This activity was extremely popular with students comparing each other’s designs. We also had a variety of activity sheets such as, create your own comic, bookmarks, word searches, origami, colouring sheets, guess the manga in the jar competition to name but a few! Thanks to the Student Council raising funds for the library, I was able to purchase lots of new books, which were very popular, especially the Manga!

Our Winter Gardens were decorated with lifesize cutouts of superheroes and villains, and our students had great fun identifying them.

On top of this, we had our tutor time competition where tutor groups had to work together to identify the character from only their silhouette! Well done to the following tutor groups who acheived the highest scores:

Curie 7

Seacole 2

Mandela 5

Shakespeare 7

A box of chocolates will be winging their way to you shortly!

Inter College Reading Competition

Our Inter College Reading Competition continues at a pace, with students filling the college boxes with coloured tokens in an attempt to claim the trophy (right) as their own.

There is stiff competition this year, especially between Seacole College (last year's winners) and Mandela College.

Let the battle continue!
