Online Safety

As part of our filtering and monitoring of student devices, the academy uses Smoothwall which operates to keep everybody safe.  It is an important part of keeping children safe online, to talk with your child about their online safety. Here is a link to a National Online Safety document which will help you navigate your way around social media.

iPhone and Android parental controls

Students have lessons in Healthy Minds and IT regarding online safety but as a parent/carer it is important that you also have an eye on their mobile phone usage.  As a parent, it’s completely understandable to be concerned about the digital habits your child develops. Between cyberbullying, misinformation, too much time spent online, and other potential harms, ensuring your child interacts with as safe an online environment as possible is essential. Thankfully, there are many things you can do to ensure that your child is protected.

Below is a useful guide for setting up 'screen time' on iPhone which can: limit the time your child can use their mobile, restrict the content they can access, limit time on certain categories of app (e.g. social media).

Managing Screen  Time on iPhones

Screen Time allows you to manage settings for downtime, app use, contacts, content ratings, and more. To use Screen Time, your child must be using an eligible device. See the Screen Time section in the Apple Support article System Requirements for iCloud.

If your child requests more screen time, you can approve or decline the request in Settings  > Screen Time or in Messages .

Receive warnings about sensitive content on iPhones

Screen Time can check whether you or other family members have received or sent any sensitive content (including photos or videos). See Check for sensitive images.

You can also block sensitive content and set restrictions on purchases. See Set communication and safety limits and block inappropriate content on iPhone.

Setting up Family Link (parental controls) on Android

If the Family Link app is not already on the device then it can be installed by searching for it in the Google Play Store.
