This week at The Leigh Academy we have enjoyed learning all about “What does it mean to be British?” We have experienced British music and British themed food in the restaurant. We have learned about the Commonwealth and different cultures within it. We have been developing our Open-Minded IB profile as we think about and appreciate our own cultures and histories, as well as the values and cultures of others.
On Friday 27th May, we were able to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee with a fantastic day of activities. We began with students and staff dressed in red, white and blue, we continued with a range of College competitions including designing a Jubilee stamp, creating British music, poems, flags and time to play traditional British family board games in our tutor groups.
Students in Year 7,8,9,10, 12 and our Milestone @The Leigh colleagues have also had a whole College Picnic on the field listening to the national anthem and with the Union Jack flying, followed by team games. Students have enjoyed the traditional activities including each the egg and spoon race, 3 legged race, skipping and obstacle race.
We have also been working hard this week to ensure our Queen Elizabeth II Garden is established, with the bed dug and our first vegetables and herbs planted. Our Year 12 IBCP students have been involved as part of their Service as Action as well as our Milestone @ The Leigh students who are already experts in gardening. We are so excited to see these grow and look forward to the autumn when we will also be able to plant our fruit trees and establish our orchard.
