Design Technology (DT) is a new and exciting subject at our school, designed to develop students' creativity, problem-solving skills and practical ability. The subject combines design, technology, engineering and innovation, giving students opportunities to move from an initial idea through to the design and manufacture of a working product.
Students will learn through a combination of theory, practical activities, design challenges and project-based learning. The emphasis is on learning by doing, encouraging students to experiment, make mistakes, evaluate their work and develop improved solutions.
Throughout the course, students will experience a broad range of Design Technology disciplines, including:
Students will be introduced to the safe and responsible use of a range of:
Hand tools
Power tools
Workshop machinery
Measuring and marking equipment
Materials and manufacturing processes
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Workshop health and safety procedures
Safety is a fundamental part of the subject. Students will learn how to select and use tools appropriately and understand the risks associated with different materials, equipment and processes.
