Tutors are often the first point of contact for students when pastoral concerns arise. Because tutors see their students regularly and develop consistent relationships with them, they are ideally placed to notice changes in behaviour, mood, friendships, attendance, organisation or academic engagement.
Tutors also provide an important link between the student, home and the wider school pastoral team. They can identify concerns early, provide initial support, communicate with parents when appropriate, and refer more serious or ongoing issues to the relevant member of the pastoral team.
The tutor's role is therefore not to solve every problem, but to listen, support, identify concerns and ensure that students are connected with the right people.
Ultimately, effective tutoring helps students feel known, valued, supported and safe.
