The school
King Henry VIII College, Malaysia (KH8) was established in 2018. It is the first international sister school to Christ College Brecon, an independent school in the UK founded by King Henry VIII in 1541. KH8 is an independent, multinational, non-denominational day and boarding school with English as the language of instruction. Boarding facilities on the school grounds are currently available to students in Year 6 (Grade 5) and above. The school is located in Cyberjaya, a planned township on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur. Already a member of the Association of International Malaysian Schools (AIMS) and the Boarding Schools Association (BSA), the school is also an associate member of FOBISIA - a regional organisation recognized by the UK Department for Education. The Primary School and Senior School has approximately 600 students on roll. The Senior School caters for students from the age of 11-18 (Years 7 – 13, Grades 6 - 12). There are presently around 250 students in the Senior School with a diverse student population representing Malaysia, China, South Korea, Japan, Indonesia, Taiwan, Singapore, UK, USA, India and a host of other nationalities.
The curriculum
All Senior School students follow a British-style curriculum in Years 7–9. This is followed by an intensive two-year programme leading to the internationally recognised International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE). Students usually follow 10 subjects. Over the two years, most students take courses in English Language and Literature, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. In addition, they choose four extra subjects of their choice. In the Sixth Form (Years 12 and 13) students generally begin studying three or four Advanced Subsidiary (AS) Levels, followed by three or four Advanced (A) Levels in Year 13. The school uses the Cambridge Assessment International Examinations Board (CAIE) and Pearson Edexcel examination board. Please note: It is school policy not to rank students, nor do we calculate grade point average (GPA).
IGCSE
The IGCSE is a qualification taken by 14 to 16 year olds. The qualification involves studying the theory of a subject combined with investigative work. Some subjects, such as the Sciences, Drama and Physical Education also involve practical work. IGCSEs are studied full-time and normally take two academic years to complete. They are externally assessed mainly through written examinations, plus elements of coursework that are completed throughout the course. Coursework can include projects, fieldwork, artwork, essays, experiments or investigations. The following subjects are offered at IGCSE level: Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, English Language, English Literature, Geography, History, Economics, French, Spanish, Mandarin, Bahasa Malay, Art, Photography, Drama, Music, Physical Education. More information about IGCSE subjects at KH8 can be found here.
IGCSE grading: A*, A, B, C, D, E, F, G and Unclassified (U)
IGCSE subjects are examined at the end of Year 11, although in some cases students may be entered early, a testament of their academic abilities (e.g. Mathematics). Assessment is via externally set and assessed examinations or coursework, or a combination of both.
