YOUR MANDARIN PATHWAY
It is important that you embark upon the learning pathway most suitable to your foundation in the Mandarin language. We offer three different IGCSE courses in the Mandarin Department. Below is a guide to help you choose the course most suitable for you.
First Language The Cambridge IGCSE First Language Chinese (0509) is designed for learners whose first language is Chinese. The syllabus develops learners' ability to communicate clearly, accurately and effectively.
Cambridge IGCSE First Language Chinese offers candidates the opportunity to respond knowledgeably to a range of reading passages. Candidates will use some of these passages to inform and inspire their own writing and write in a range of text types for different audiences. The passages cover a range of genres and types, including fiction and non-fiction, as well as Classical Chinese texts, and may also include other forms of writing, such as essays, reviews and articles. Learners will have the opportunity to read Classical Chinese prose texts to help to deepen their knowledge of Chinese culture.
Second Language is for heritage students who have been living out of China (or other areas where Chinese is used as an official language) or non-heritage students who have been living in China and learning Mandarin for a long time. Students that have a proven ability; through assessment, may be allowed to take First Language.
Foreign Language is for non-native/non-heritage students. Students that have a proven ability, through assessment, may be allowed to take Second Language.
