Join the PTSA for 2021-2022
September 16, 2020
Dear Brown School Family,
Thank you so much to everyone who signed up for an SBDM Committee. We had a record number of volunteers this year! Not counting the committee chairs, we had 69 people sign up! Your committee chairs should be reaching out to you by the end of the day today to let you know when your first meeting will be held. Every committee should have their first meeting prior to September 24th. Committee chairs are: Budget Committee, Angela Parsons; Curriculum & Instruction Committee, Brian Garrett; Professional Development Committee, Torri Martin; Racial Equity Task Force, Shawn Wilson & Mary Frances Landenwich; Safety & School Climate Committee, Shawn Wilson.
I'm very excited to share that Brown is being allocated two English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers one day per week to work with our elementary and middle school students. The teachers will be working at other schools on the other days of the week. The positions will be posted on the JCPS Joblist this week.
I also want to give a shout out to our PTSA. We already have the second highest number of members in our district, but we still need you to join. Won't you please show our school your support and join our PTSA? An annual membership is only $5 and you can join at the link below in the PTSA section.
Warm regards,
Dr. Angela, Principal

TODAY 9/16 is the LAST day to request a device or hot spot. If you are in need of a device and haven't requested one please call/text Amy today.
QUESTION OF THE WEEK:
QUESTION: I have a student that is reporting that they are having tech problems with their JCPS device. Should they request another device?
ANSWER: NO. Please do not request a new device through the Device Assistance Program. First, reach out to Amy Thornton by visiting the Tech Help @Brown to see if the issue can be fixed. Then, if the device needs to be switched out at school, arrangements will be made to do that.
Are you having tech problems? The Tech Help @Brown website is linked off of Brown's homepage under PARENT and STUDENT. You can choose various ways to get help by visiting https://bit.ly/browntech.
Email Amy Thornton or call 502-252-1635 with questions.
We currently have 288 books checked out to students. Do you currently have library books that you need to return? We wanted to let you know that you have options to return books to us. If you have any questions please email library clerk Anitra Wilson, or library sub Rita Nichols.
Take the books to the school and place them in the box at the front desk area. This option is only available every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8:00-2:30PM. We will of course use safe distancing guidelines, and we ask that you please wear a mask.
Wait until we return in person
Wait to return items until we have more information about how your child can select a book to take home from our library.
(Our Librarian, Amanda Klakamp, will be happy to answer any questions you have when she returns September 25, 2020)
Don't forget to join the PTSA this year! See the below flyers for info on how to join. The PTSA is hard at work planning for the upcoming 2020-2021 academic year! We will be announcing more information about future meetings soon!
If you need homework help for your child or additional resources, check out the Louisville Free Public Library's Homework Help page.
Did you know that most JCPS schools are offering free meals to all students on Tuesdays & Thursdays? Students do not need to be present at pick up. Click here for more details.
High School Fall Sports:
Our fall season has gotten off to a good start with volleyball and soccer starting matches this week. Both of those teams will be in tournament action at Whitefield Saturday. Our volleyball team will take on Highland Latin in the first round of the All "A" Tournament and our soccer team will play Portland Christian in Whitefield's Small Schools Tournament. We hope to come away with some championships!
Cross Country has another meet this Thursday against Iroquois and J-Town. Last week, Ezekiel Isom finished first and our team defeated J-town. All of our runners are working hard every day and we look for great things as the season progresses.
Our golfers have also been working really hard and we are seeing great improvements in every member of the team. Coach Barry see's a lot of potential in a lot of our younger golfers and will have a good team for years to come. Our next match isn't until late next week, so we will have some good practice opportunities until then.
We are very proud of all of our student athletes that are participating during this time. Our students have been doing an excellent job of following protocols and ensuring our season can continue. We are grateful for their hard work on and off the court.
Middle School Fall Sports:
Middle school fall sports are canceled until we are back to in-person classes.
Elementary Fall Sports:
All fall elementary sports have been canceled. We will keep you updated for future elementary athletic opportunities.
If you have any questions, please feel free to email Justin Leonard at Justin.leonard@jefferson.kyschools.us. GO BEARS!!

My name is Colin Drake, and I'm an architect with JRA Architects here in Louisville. I wanted to share a community service project that a small group of friends and I have started to give families another COVID-friendly outdoor activity during these crazy times. We create field mazes in underutilized public space, and have just completed our newest installation at 1800 River Road, across from Eva Bandman Park. They're available at all times, and offer 3 levels of difficulty to ensure that the whole family can embrace the challenge. I've included links to our website, where you can learn a little more about what we do, and a brand new video I created for these River Road mazes.
