Bear Essentials #40

Principal's Message

Dear Brown School Family,

We are in need of parents to serve on a very important task force to provide solutions to several priorities for our school. We are calling this the Five Goals Task Force. Here are those goals.

Goal 1: Equal planning time for ALL teachers*

Goal 2: Time for advisory sessions for upper school students.*

Goal 3: During the day PLC meeting time for teachers.

Goal 4: Time for teachers to observe other teachers in their PLC.

Goal 5: Embedded acceleration time for all K-12 students

* Goal 1 & Goal 2 are priority goals over goals 3-5.

This task force could determine to change the school's period schedule to accomplish these tasks, or they could find other ways to reach these goals. Members of the task force will work together to determine meeting times and locations (in-person or virtual). We need equal numbers of parents from the following grade levels to participate (either 1 or 2 elementary parents, middle school parents, and high school parents) along with one parent of an ECE student. If you are interested in serving, please complete THIS FORM by midnight on Monday, May 31st.

Warm regards,

Dr. Angela, Principal

This Week's Essentials

Is your student ready for 6th-grade entry?

You may click on the links below to access any form needed.

  1. School physical - A school physical is required for 6th-grade entry. The Preventative Health Care Examination Form can be completed by your child’s physician up to one year prior to the first day of attendance in 6th grade.

Please be aware that a sports physical cannot be accepted as a substitute for the school physical. If your child is considering playing a sport, you may want to have both the school physical form and the sports physical form completed by your child’s healthcare provider at the time of the appointment. These forms are not interchangeable.

  1. Immunization Certificate - Generally, students in this age group are also due for a Tdap, Varicella, and/or Meningococcal (MCV) in order to keep immunizations current. The form can be found here: KY Immunization Certificate. You may want to avoid the rush this summer at your health care provider by scheduling your visit now. Without the Kentucky Immunization Certificate, a Medical Exemption Certificate, or a Religious Exemption Certificate must be obtained and Notarized.

  2. State-certified birth certificate – All students must have a state-certified birth certificate on file at the school, (students new to the school will need to submit a copy).

Additionally, for students new to Brown School - other health records will be requested from the student’s previous school, including the Eye Exam form, and Dental Exam form, if applicable. It will be up to the parent/guardian to provide these items if they cannot be obtained from the student’s previous school.

For information regarding any health concern (epilepsy, diabetes, asthma, allergies, heart disease, etc.) or for information regarding medication required during school hours, please call JCPS Health Services at 485-3387, or visit School Health Requirements.

Please contact Stacey Powell, Brown School Records Clerk, at 485-8216 for further information.

Are you leaving Brown?

If your student, regardless of grade level, will be attending another school for the 2021-22 school year, please send the Records Clerk, Stacey Powell, an email stating which school your child will be attending. It is important that we have time to prepare your student's educational folder for the next school.

Also, if ANY of your contact information changes (email address, cellphone, or home address) please Stacey know that too. You may miss out on the beginning of the year information from our school or the district.

Pathfinder School of Innovation

There are no plans to be on NTI or have virtual learning at Brown School at the start of the 2021-22 school year. Unless a new executive order is enacted or statutory change occurs, school will be in-person and will be 5-days a week.

The message below was sent to JCPS families and allows families to sign up for a NEW virtual school, Pathfinder School of Innovation. The message has the information needed for students/families, but we wanted to be certain a few points are very clear.

  • Any student who enrolls at the Pathfinder School of Innovation will no longer be a Brown student.

  • Upon graduation, Pathfinder students will not receive a Brown High School diploma.

  • Pathfinder students will not be permitted to participate in athletics, clubs, co-curricular, or extracurricular programs at Brown School.

If you have questions, please reach out to one of our counselors. If we do not have the answer, we will assist you in getting connected to someone who can assist you. There is a link at the very bottom with helpful FAQs as well as a phone number to call and to speak with someone.

JCPS is opening a new virtual education program for students in grades 6-12 beginning in the 2021-2022 school year. Students will have a rigorous curriculum and be held to the same high academic standards as their on-campus peers. Students will not have to attend virtually for the entire school day, but there will be a structured schedule for synchronous (live) or asynchronous (on-demand) learning. Students will be able to receive Special Education and English Second Language (ESL) services. Devices will be provided to students who need them.

Pathfinder School of Innovation Students Are:

  • Self-directed and committed to learning

  • Comfortable learning in a virtual environment

  • Reachable and responsive

  • Willing to take advantage of available support services

  • Ready to connect, share and collaborate

Once accepted, students will only be enrolled in Pathfinder School of Innovation and NOT their previous school. They will have the opportunity to participate in clubs/activities at Pathfinder School of Innovation, but will NOT participate in activities/athletics at their previous school.

Families have until June 4 to submit the application form. All students will be accepted if they complete the application form by June 4, 2021. After June 4th, families will apply through the regular transfer process and will be accepted based on the availability of space for the remainder of the 2021-22 school year.

Please note: students currently enrolled in Jefferson County High School do not need to apply. They are already enrolled and are guaranteed their spot. More information can be found at this link. If you have any questions, please contact 485-3173

What are we doing with devices over the break?

  • Students NOT returning to Brown School next year must return their student device on or before May 27 to Amy or Anitra in the library.

  • Students returning to Brown School next year will KEEP their devices over the break.

Please call or text Amy at 502-398-3450 if you have any questions.

Our softball team is wrapping up their season over the next week. They take on Moore on Wednesday 5/19 and at Central on Monday 5/24. Finish strong Lady Bears!!

Baseball has continued to show improvement every game. They have several competitive games coming up with Seneca on Wednesday 5/24, a double header vs St. Francis and Frankfort Christian on Saturday 5/22 and KCD on Tuesday 5/25. Go Bears!

Tennis wrapped up their season on Monday evening at Regionals. Sydney Makle-Bradley did a great job representing our girls team, as the only 7th grader in the tournament. Duffy Oakley had a strong showing for the boys. Great season to all of our Bears tennis athletes.

Our track team is ready to head to Regionals next Wednesday, 5/26, and make a strong push to go to State. Good luck track team, we know you will be great!!

** Any student in grades 8th-12th, that wants to participate in boys basketball next year, should reach out to coach Bibb at jbibb20@gmail.com. Our team is having open gyms and will be participating in several summer leagues in June.

Summer Tennis Opportunity:

On Saturday, 5/22, the Newburg Tennis Association is hosting a Family Fun Day at Petersburg Park Newburg from 10:00am-2:00pm. There will be games and activities for the family, and signups for their tennis clinic. The tennis clinic will run every Tuesday and Thursday for 8 weeks, starting on June 8th from 6:30 to 7:30. The clinic is for ages 5 through adult. Its a great opportunity to learn the game.

Fall Sports (next school year):

It is time to start getting ready for fall sports for next year. Our high school sports offerings include, cross country, golf, boys and girls soccer and volleyball. Practices will begin July 15th. If your high school student is interested in participating, please reach out to the coach listed below.

We are currently planning on middle school sports starting July 15th. Our list of fall middle school sports include cross country, golf (7th and 8th grade) and volleyball. We are currently searching for a middle school volleyball coach, so please reach out to Matt Davis or Justin Leonard if you are interested.

We are still unclear with what elementary sports will look like, or if we will be able to offer fall sports for elementary. We normally offer soccer (3rd-5th) and cross country (K-5) during the fall season, so please reach out if that interests your student. We need parent volunteers for soccer and cross country. If you are interested in coaching either team, please reach out to Justin Leonard or Josh Luttrell.

All student athletes are required to complete all athletic paperwork and hand it in at the first practice. Middle and high school coaches will also send out a link to pay athletic insurance when practices get closer. Elementary athletes will be required to turn in a sports physical before participating in any practices/games for the 2021-2022 school year. Elementary will use the middle school sports physical form that can be found on our website.
