Dear Brown School Family,
Today I would like to commend the work ethic and resiliency of our 8th graders and our seniors. These students have been working on their North Star Backpack Defense presentations since the beginning of the school year, and started presenting their work by the third week of school. As of this past Monday, 41% of our 8th graders and 35% of our seniors have successfully completed their defenses. Our 5th graders have started working on their defenses as well and are slated to begin their presentations soon.
So what are North Star Backpack Defenses? All students at Brown are compiling an electronic portfolio, called their JCPS Backpack. Students are placing their most important student work in this portfolio - work resulting from project-based learning opportunities, presented at a Self-Directed Learning (SDL) Showcase, or related to our magnet theme that ties into our SDL Framework. Even our kindergarteners will have artifacts uploaded before the end of the school year. Students in grades 5, 8, and 12 will select student work from the electronic portfolio to use as evidence to support their growth in success skills tied to our SDL Framework and the JCPS Backpack of Success Skills, which they will present before a panel.
So, what can you do to support your student in this endeavor? Be sure to participate in our Student-Led Conference Days and ensure your student participates in the SDL Showcase this spring. Both of these events provide an opportunity for your students to present and discuss their learning and growth, which is a vital part of their North Star Backpack Defense and our magnet program. Furthermore, ask your student to show you their JCPS Backpack (electronic portfolio) and ask questions. What are they most proud of? What was most challenging? Where did they show the most growth? In what areas do they still need to grow and what is their action plan?
Thank you so much for your support in ensuring we forge self-directed lifelong learners with reasoned minds and educated hearts!
Warm regards,
Dr. Angela, Principal
We are about to start the 2nd semester and this is when the majority of our defenses will happen. If you have a 5th, 8th, or 12th grader and aren't sure when they will defend, please reach out to us. Students can get help before school and in-office hours from 2 pm-3 pm.
The Backpack of Success Skills is when students are an effective communicator, a prepared and resilient learner, an emerging innovator, a culturally and globally competent citizen, and a productive collaborator.

Problem: Teachers are always asking if they can use a fantastic tool called Flip Grid with students. The answer is YES, but parents have to fill out a consent form that is online. Check out this article on ways to use FlipGrid.
Solution: Parents will find the "optional" FlipGrid consent form on the JCPS Parent Place. This is the same website you used to complete required school forms, but is different from Parent Portal, which is for grades.
How to give Consent:
Select the "Complete Forms" icon.
Look for forms that state they are "optional".
If you are having technical difficulties, please visit the Tech@Brown website it offers various ways to get help, and is linked off of our homepage under both PARENT and STUDENT.

Reminder: Our 313-CARE hotline is open from 3-7 p.m. every Monday through Thursday. Our CARE Operators are retired school counselors with years of experience in school-based counseling support. This resource gives families the opportunity to receive assistance with referrals and connections to counseling services after regular business hours.
The hotline will be available through January 26, 2021.
Please encourage your student to shine in showing off our school-wide expectations:
Be Respectful
Be Responsible
Be Safe
Always Pursue Excellence

Help us shape the future of PlayWorks at Waterfront Park!
We are soliciting community input for PlayWorks at Waterfront Park, the first major component of the Waterfront Park 22.5-acre Phase IV expansion.
Please visit our informational website and provide your feedback by January 29, 2021.
PlayWorks is a 1.5 acre outdoor experiential learning area created in collaboration with the Kentucky Science Center and celebrates our waterfront’s history by using authentic objects as a catalyst for families and kids to “Make Play Out of Work.” Visitors will have the opportunity to play and explore around real river and industrial artifacts, including turning a towboat propeller, moving a conveyor belt, and role playing as an excavator operator.
Based on early input through a community engagement workshop, we are pleased to present this schematic plan for PlayWorks. It will be a vibrant destination for families and children with world-class amenities that bring together the best of what both Waterfront Park and Kentucky Science Center have to offer. At this point in the design process, we are delighted to provide you this exciting update and need your feedback to further develop the plan and design elements. Because the pandemic prevents us from meeting in person, we have developed this website to provide you an informational video, details on the schematic designs for PlayWorks, information on the overall Master Plan for Phase IV of Waterfront Park, and our online questionnaire. The questionnaire will remain open until January 29, 2021. We welcome all input and ask that you please also share this news with your friends and network. For those that may not have computer access: The Louisville Free Public Library offers free in-person computer access by appointment and free public Wi-Fi outside of the buildings. In addition, printed informational materials will be available at the Main, Portland, Western, and Shawnee library branches. For a list of library locations and appointments to access the website and questionnaire, please visit https://www.lfpl.org/ or call (502) 574-1611.
