Bear Essentials #28
February 24, 2021
Principal's Message
Dear Brown School Family,
We still have several families who have not completed the form to indicate whether their student(s) will be returning to in-person instruction or enrolling in our virtual learning academy. Please CLICK HERE to complete the form.
Our JCPS Board of Education will be voting tomorrow night on whether to return to in-person instruction. If the Board does approve a return to in-person instruction, please watch this newsletter for information about orientation sessions we will be holding to help you and your student get ready. Elementary students may have new teachers, virtual students will have new schedules, and in-person students will have new procedures. We want to ensure that you and your student(s) have all the information needed to make this transition as smooth as possible.
Warm regards,
Dr. Angela, Principal
This Week's Essentials
Animal Welfare Club
Check In Meeting!
The SBDM Council APPROVED our request to have the Animal Welfare Club at Brown. We are so very excited to officially start this group. As we are working to gather some guest speakers and other exciting interests, we thought that we would hold a "check - in" session on Monday, March 1st at 3:00pm.
This will be a short meeting and we will just go over some social media things as well as doing a check in with everyone before we have our first guest speaker.
Vision: The Animal Welfare Club will be an education-based group dedicated to helping animals and fostering a compassionate, conscious, generation of animal lovers. Group activities will include virtual visits from animal care experts, rescues, and wildlife professionals.
Monday, March 1st at 3:00 pm

Black History Month
Our Black Student Union is planning a plethora of events for Black History Month. Be sure to check this section each week through the end of February! Other upcoming events include our Annual Black History Program & Awards, Racial Equity Book Readings, Book Awards, and Coffee & Conversation Sessions.
Our BSU is planning an amazing virtual Black History Program for Friday, March 5th. BSU members will attend each middle and high school advisory session, act as emcees, and present several pre-recorded student performances. BSU members will also visit our elementary virtual classes that day as well to share.
This week’s Coffee and Conversations will consist of a panel discussion featuring Brown School Alumni. Jericho Curry, Alexis Washburn, and Diane Courington will speak to our students this Friday, February 26th. Jericho Curry is a former student of UK and Alexis Washburn is a current student at Howard University. Many of you are familiar with Ms. Diane as a former teacher at Brown. We’re very excited to speak with these individuals about their unique college experiences and career ambitions. We hope to see you there!
The Black Student Union will be hosting Coffee and Conversation meetings throughout the month of February, so please feel free to contact any BSU board members for any further information. Our google meet code is: BSU2020. You can email our board members at: Maya Anderson, Aaliyah Cox, Malaysia Green, Ziona King, and Alexis Doe.
