Dear Brown School Family,
Each year, stakeholders in our Budget Committee work together to develop a comprehensive spending plan for the following school year that will move us closer to reaching our school vision - that all Brown School students forge reasoned minds and educated hearts of self-directed lifelong learners. One portion of our budget, our Extended School Services (ESS) budget, will be up for approval at tomorrow's SBDM Council meeting. I always want to give our full family of stakeholders the opportunity to comment on budgetary decisions, because these decisions impact our school significantly. You can see our ESS budget HERE. It is predominately used to provide additional instruction to students in grades 3-5 in both reading and math during the school day. We also use the funds to provide assistance to juniors in reading and math to help them be college ready. If you'd like to comment on our budget during the SBDM meeting, you can join on Thursday at 4:00 PM at THIS ZOOM LINK. If you have any questions, please let me know! I'm happy to discuss.
Warm regards,
Dr. Angela, Principal
Our Black Student Union is planning a plethora of events for Black History Month. Be sure to check this section each week through the end of February! Other upcoming events include our Annual Black History Program & Awards, Racial Equity Book Readings, Book Awards, and Coffee & Conversation Sessions.
Nominate a Brown School student for a Book Award! Click HERE to complete the form.
Coffee & Conversations will return on February 19th from 10:05-11:05 with Carmellia Jackson (she/her). Carmellia hails from Somerset, Kentucky. After high school, she attended her alma mater, Berea College, where she earned a Tuition Promise Scholarship. During her time there as a student, she worked as a teacher assistant, resident hall advisor, tell-a-thon caller, and was the first black female president of the Student Alumni Council of Berea College. Carmellia studied both Child and Family Studies and Psychology and graduated in 2016.
After graduation, Carmellia spent time as a Gift Officer where she traveled all over the United States sharing her story and encouraging donors of Berea College to continue supporting the institution and students like her. After about two years, she changed roles and became an Admissions Counselor for the College. Her primary recruiting territory was Louisville, Western Kentucky, and the areas in between, and as a result, has ventured into every high school in Louisville.
Carmellia decided in 2019 to pursue her Masters in Social Work and a Masters in Couple and Family Therapy at the University of Louisville Kent School. She will be graduating in May 2021 and plans to be a therapist working with adolescent youth, primarily those who identify within communities of color. She currently serves as the Louisville Girls Leadership Program Manager. Carmellia’s goal is to serve and represent underrepresented populations and communities while challenging oppressive systems, structures, and people who try to inhibit them.
The Black Student Union will be hosting Coffee and Conversation meetings throughout the month of February, so please feel free to contact any BSU board members for any further information. Our google meet code is: BSU2020. You can email our board members at: Maya Anderson, Aaliyah Cox, Malaysia Green, Ziona King, and Alexis Doe.

Hello! I am Jake Amettis, born and raised in Louisville and a graduate of Western Kentucky University. I like bringing my passion for history to the social studies classroom. I love teaching because not only do I get to share the joy of social studies, but I also get to interact with students and help widen their perspectives. When I’m not teaching I enjoy watching sports, playing music, and chess. I am honored to be at Brown and loving it so far!

High School Winter Sports:
Our boys and girls basketball teams are ready for the weather to improve so that they can play again. This Friday we will host Moore and head to Southern on Friday, so we are ready for a couple of wins!
Bowling has also been on hold because of weather and missed our match vs Eastern, but are hopeful to take on Male on Thursday 2/18.
Daphne Powell, who is an 8th grader on our high school swimming and diving team, was the first Brown School student to dive in a high school sanctioned meet since 1994. She had some great dives and finished 5th in her first competition. Go to our schools Facebook page to check out those videos.
Our swimming team is still working hard at practice and "making some waves" in the pool. We are currently working on our schedule and should be able to update our calendar with some swim meets very soon. Stay tuned!
