1. Brainstorm, Design Opportunity, and Brief

Brainstorm

Below is an image of my brainstorm. It should contain about 20 ideas.

Students: I would recommend using Google Draw for making a mindmap for this. You may also use paper if you like.

Design Opportunity

I have the opportunity to design a physical mascot for an ISM elementary class. The ES students will have already chosen the name of their mascot (the Boxing Dragons, for example), and I will then attempt to make my own version of that creature. The mascot will be made from stacked layers of laser cut cardboard that can be held together by wooden dowel rods and glue. I can also use external materials such as plastic eyes, paint, textures, etc to make the mascot more exciting.

Design Brief

I will make the "Disco Diamonds" mascot for Ms. Applebee's grade 2 students. The diamond shape will be octohedral and mainly symmetric. It will have a mouth cut into the top half, and the eyeballs will be attached using ping pong balls that are cut in half and glued to the cardboard. The disco element will be acheived using sequins which I'll attach (all over) using a clear glue. The size of the diamond will be less than 30 cm in height, and will vary depending on how much cardboard is needed. I will paint the diamond white, which will be underneath the sequins.

Design Specifications, as stated by the client (students).

The students showed me their mascot shirt, and explained how the diamond had 8 sides: 4 on top and 4 on bottom. It was covered in small disco mirrors, exactly like a disco ball. Since Ms. Applebee frowned on glitter, they recommended that silver sequins be used to make the disco mirrors. They requested that the diamond have floppy legs, so that they can make him act like he's dancing. The also requested that he be able to sit on a stand so that his floppy legs can dangle and move. His mouth should show him to be super happy and his eyes should be quite big.
