Social Emotional Learning (SEL)
Core Resource Overview
Compelling Why
Why address the needs of the whole child?
Why teach SEL skills and competencies?
The intentional teaching of social-emotional skills and competencies is an essential component of Lakeville Area Schools’ overall SEL recipe. Just as we teach academic content including reading, writing, mathematics, and the arts, social-emotional skills and competencies must be intentionally taught. Moreover, SEL skills must not simply be relegated to a one-time classroom experience, but rather serve as a foundation and catalyst for, the generalization of skills. SEL concepts need to be modeled, reinforced, and integrated for students to acquire skills and apply their learning in meaningful ways, throughout a variety of environments.
Lakeville Area Schools' SEL Framework
The district’s SEL Framework is rooted in the MN Department of Education’s five SEL competencies from the Collaborative for Academic and Social Emotional Learning (CASEL) framework, along with the alignment to the District’s Strategic Plan.

SEL Progression of Learning
Over the past two years, our highly skilled elementary licensed school counselors have been analyzing the MN Department of Education's five SEL competencies. They have unpacked each of the benchmarks to the student Learning Target and have identified the placement in developmentally appropriate grade levels. The benchmarks in the five competency areas were originally identified in grade bands, rather than individual grade levels. The MDE SEL benchmarks provide us with an instructional framework that supports us with the intentional implementation of the five SEL competencies.
Classroom Practices Reflection & Planning Tool
In order to ensure a guaranteed and viable SEL curriculum for all students across our system, the District Elementary SEL Leadership Team has developed a common understanding of the key look-fors that represent best practices in SEL instruction.
This rubric is a tool that supports teachers in their self-reflection of their current practices and future goal setting. In addition, this tool may be utilized as a needs assessment by our elementary licensed school counselors, who coach and support our classroom teachers as they implement best practices in SEL instruction.
LAS SEL Rubric
This is the elementary SEL core resource rubric that the District Elementary SEL Leadership Team will be utilizing as they evaluate and recommend a district-wide SEL core resource.
This rubric provides criteria by which to measure how well lessons and units are designed to align with best practices in SEL instruction and the expectations of MDE’s five SEL competencies.
The District Elementary SEL Leadership Team will be making their final recommendations in December/January of the 2022-23 school year. This decision will be based on a careful examination of the identified field-tested resources utilizing the LAS SEL core resource rubric, as well as analyzing feedback provided by field test teachers, district-wide staff, and community stakeholders.
