For presentation slides with notes: Math Talks
Math Talks support the 8 mathematical practices, which are woven within MN Academic Math Standards.
MP1: Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
MP2: Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
MP3: Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
MP4: Model with mathematics.
MP5: Use appropriate tools strategically.
MP6: Attend to precision.
MP7: Look for and make use of structure.
MP8: Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning
This presentation includes 6 different types of math talks and their unique purposes. Many of you will recognize the “Open Share Strategy”.
The goal is to learn more about these different types of math talks and when/how to embed them within classroom math instruction.
Why? Let’s Justify Math Talk discussion in a 2nd grade classroom as students try to explain the commutative property of addition.
Define and Clarify discussion as 2nd graders work to create a model for a separating situation.
