The IXL SmartScore--Myth vs. Fact
(Video 2:14)
✔Recommended goal between 70-80
✔Not set in IXL, so teachers must communicate with students
✔May set lower at beginning of the unit, then adjust
✔Research shows consistently achieving proficiency has a positive impact on state assessments-- up to 16 points!
✔100 is not appropriate to set for students
✔Smart tips--Take breaks, set the right goals, don’t rush
Teachers CAN reset SmartScores.
Students' SmartScores do not reset year over year. They are intended to be ongoing and show the most up to date levels of proficiency for each skill.
Resetting brings student SmartScores back to 0
Students start from the beginning of a skill.
Teachers have more freedom to revisit useful skills on IXL
Resets can be helpful when it’s time to review.
Also helpful for skills covered earlier in the semester that you’d now like to go over before an assessment.
In cases where your students are having difficulty with a skill, IXL recommends not resetting SmartScores. IXL has several resources to help students who are struggling, including step-by-step answer explanations and in-skill recommendations, which empower students to take ownership of their learning.
It’s also a best practice for teachers who team teach to check with their co-teachers before resetting a skill, in order to make sure their colleague is not currently working on that skill with students.
There is no way to undo a SmartScore reset, so it’s best to prevent mistakes before they happen.
Reset SmartScores by going to the Skill Analysis report in the Analytics tab.
Bring up the report for the skill you’d like to reset,.
Click the Reset SmartScores button in the top-right corner of the Class breakdown section.
For Checkpoints, the Reset SmartScores button can be found in the Skill Analysis report at the bottom of the Skill overview section.
Choose to reset SmartScores for specific classes or your entire roster.
Skills remain assigned to a student until the teacher who assigned them clear their skills.
This process has been made a whole lot easier on the new teacher dashboards!
Teachers will see an X at the bottom of the Suggested Skills section on their dashboard.
By clicking this, teachers can clear all of the skills that have been suggested at once.
