The UFLI Foundations Decodables Text Guide is designed to assist teachers in locating decodable text from various sources to align with phonics skills being taught in the classroom.
This document was created to give guidance on how parents can support their child with reading at home. Links are provided for online decodable books as well as reading ideas and strategies for phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
The sequence of grapheme-phoneme correspondences through the series of books is clearly outlined and aligns with phonics instruction
The target grapheme-phoneme correspondences appear often throughout the text
Text is continuous and includes correct grammar and punctuation
Early readers contain only one sentence to a page and then progress to more text as the reader gains more experience
Use of non-phonetic (heart) words is minimized so that the primary strategy is decoding using phonic knowledge rather than guessing words in context. Any heart words are noted for teachers so they can be discussed with beginning readers prior to reading text to minimize potential confusion
