Minnesota’s K-12 Academic Standards are reviewed and revised on a 10-year cycle with one content area of academic standards updated each year. These academic standards are the statewide expectations for student learning in K-12 public schools. School districts are required to implement the standards, so all students have access to high-quality content and instruction. The standards are the specific knowledge or skill that a student must master by the end of a grade level.
The required full implementation of the MN Academic Standards in Science is scheduled for the 2024-2025 school year. Since the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCAs) are based on the standards, the Science MCA-IV will be implemented in the spring of 2025 for grades 5, 8, and High School.
The Science MCAs in grade 5 represent benchmarks from grades 3, 4, and 5. In order to properly prepare for the implementation of the MCA-IV in the spring of 2025, Lakeville Area Schools will be following the implementation guideline set forth by the MN Department of Education:
Elementary Science Implementation Timeline
2022-2023 School Year - Grades K & 3
2023-2024 School Year - Grades 1 & 4
2024-2025 School Year - Grades 2 & 5 and MCA-IV in grades 5, 8 & High School
As part of the K-5 science standards review process, the Teaching & Learning engaged in conversations with other districts, as well as conducted a number of field tests to narrow down the selection of potential district-wide, core resources that support the implementation of the new 2019 MN Academic Science Standards.
Teacher leaders from the District Science Leadership Team (DSLT) played a key role in conducting the field tests across the district. The feedback from this process has been invaluable.
Any interested staff, along with parents and community members, have the opportunity to review the resources and provide feedback as it relates to the selection process. All K-5 staff may access additional information and the science resource feedback form below.
Parents and community members may access additional information and the science resource feedback form on the district website. Both science resource feedback forms will be available through April 29.
In May 2022, the full District Science Leadership Team (DSLT) will be participating in formal presentations that will highlight each of the resources, along with utilizing the feedback from the field test teachers, staff, and community members, in order to recommend a district-wide core resource for adoption.
After debriefing with the field test teachers and discussion with the District Science Leadership Team, HMH will no longer be considered as a finalist in the science core resource selection process.
