Dear parents and carers

A short but very busy week this week. We have had sports days for years 1, 2, nursery, reception and year 4. Thank you to Mrs Pearce for organising these so well. We would also like to thank Mr Ennis and Mr Escrader for setting up the activities in the mornings and clearing away at the end of the sessions and to year 5 pupils who helped with the running of the events. It was great to see so many parents and carers supporting the children and showing off their athletic skills in the parents race. The weather has only impacted one nursery sports day which will be rearranged for next week.

Staff have also been showing off their athletic skills. At the weekend a number of staff took part in the Lloyd Park Race for Life and raised over £2,300 for Cancer research. The group of staff gave themselves the nickname ‘Kala’s Angels’ and were running for Ms Sriranjan and others effected by cancer.

Our new reception intake for September came to school on Monday for their stay and play. It was lovely to meet new families and see some familiar faces.

Children will receive a letter at the beginning of next week telling them which class they will be in next year and who their teacher will be. They will have an opportunity to meet their new teacher on Wednesday afternoon.

Best wishes from the Woodside team.

Attendance

These are this week's attendance figures and leading class in each phase:

EYFS: Pear Class 91.7%

KS1: 2 Oak 95%

KS2: 4 Ash 94.6%

It is essential your child is in school everyday.

Inclusion

Transitions can be very challenging to children as they often involve unfamiliar environments, new routines and the need to adapt to different social dynamics which can lead to feelings of uncertainty. Here are three tips to help to prepare your child for transition into their new year group or school:

Encourage your child to make friends: Help your child to develop their social skills and create opportunities for them to interact with their peers. Arrange playdates or social activities with other children from their new class or school if possible. Teach them how to make friends and role play situations. This can help the transition smoother and foster positive experiences.

EYFS

Nursery

As Nursery are focusing on emergency services, this week focus has been on the NHS and the people who work there. We are still talking about heroes without capes. To support talking about doctors, nurses and paramedics, Nursery children sang the rhyme, ‘Miss Polly had a Dolly.’ We talked about the rhyming words in that rhyme. Nursery children then looked at the doctors’ bag and spoke about the different instruments found in the bag. As role play supports their learning, the children took roles of doctors and patients. They chose an instrument matching the patient’s sickness. They have enjoyed being in the role and they knew what instrument to use. Some of the instruments had difficult names but the children enjoyed learning them. As the weather was good, morning Nursery children had their first Sports Day with their parents and carers cheering them all. Children were really excited as they had not had the experience of being in the field. Mathematical language could be heard when children were talking about who came first, second, third or fourth. Well done to Nursery children for having such a lovely morning. We thank our parents for the support!!

Reception

Children in Reception had the chance to visit some Year One classrooms on Monday. They explored the new environment, drew pictures and talked about their worries or concerns about going into Year One. On Thursday we enjoyed our Sport’s Day. The children represented their team colours and participated with lots of energy and enthusiasm.

In Literacy, we are reading the storybook, ‘Ruby’s Worries’  to talk about our worries and what we can do if and when we are worried. Home learning: Talk to your children about their worries and what they can do, for example, talk to their grown ups and friends.

In Maths, we are exploring weight and capacity, using the language heavy, heavier, heaviest, light, lighter, lightest, full, half full, half empty, empty. The children have had lots of fun using scales, containers and water to explore these concepts. Home learning: Explore things that are heavy, light, full and empty around your home.

For phonics, we are sounding out and blending words ending in ‘er’ and ‘est’, for example; printer, sprinter, sweetest, brightest. Next week we have our phonics assessment. Home learning: Please support your child with their blending and reading of words with digraphs and trigraphs. Click on the link to the Little Wandle website for support. https://www.littlewandlelettersandsounds.org.uk/resources/for-parents/

Reading: Please read with your child everyday. Use their ‘Big Cat’ reading book over the weekend and return that book on Monday.

Well done Reception children!

Key Stage One

Year 1

This week Year 1 have focused on a character description from our core text ‘Tidy’ while also getting the chance to role play as the main character of the book and ask Pete the Badger some interesting questions to inform our character description! Year 1 have also solidified their understanding of before and after and the days of the week.

Together Year 1 and 2 have enjoyed a wonderful sports day full of exciting competitions to show off their brilliant sport skills and sportsmanship!

Year 2

This week Year 2 have continued their mental maths skills by recalling place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication and number facts. Additionally in maths Year 2 have focused on capacity and how to accurately measure the capacity of various liquids and solids. Year 2 have enjoyed recapping their successful trip to the zoo and have started a formal report to describe their wonderful day.

Lower Key Stage Two

Year 3

Year 3 have been learning about the artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. This week the children learnt about the different symbols he used in his artwork and the children then had a go at using different techniques to add the symbols to the paint.

They applied a variety of different techniques including using the paper as a palette, drybrushing over a dried piece of work and scratching the shapes into the paint before it finally dried.

They worked tidily and efectively and produced some thoughtful examples of the techniques they had learnt.

Year 4

The Digestive system is year 4 Science topic this term and the children have been busy carrying out experiments to see how our digestive system works. They have been  learning about how nutrients are stored to positively affect our growth and metabolism as well as how waste from our daily intake of food leaves our body. They have been exposed to excellent vocabulary to help their understanding of this topic. Excellent growth mindset displayed year 4, well done!

Upper Key Stage Two

Year 5

Over the past couple of weeks, Year 5 have had the opportunity to meet two teachers from Shirley High School. On a Wednesday afternoon they have a PE session with Mr Noirette and on Thursday morning a music session with Mr Saunders. The children have enjoyed learning the history of djembe drums and how to use these drums to create different tones of music. They have explored the term, ‘polyrhythm’, and had the chance to make up their own polyrhythms within small groups giving positive feedback amongst their peers. The Year 5 children have also had the opportunity to become sports leaders, helping out with the other years’ sports days. They have all listened to the instructions given by Ms Pearce, abiding by the rules, showing off their leadership skills. They were stationed at different points throughout the Sports day, guiding other children, explaining the rules and encouraging them to persevere. We are all incredibly proud of the Year 5 children and would like to say a big thank you!

Year 6

Year 6 have been working really hard on their end of year production. They have had a few weeks of rehearsals and it was a pleasure watching them during their rehearsal today. This is their biggest show yet and they are all really enthusiastic and excited about it. They only have a few days of rehearsals to pull it all off seamlessly. Everyone, including the choir, have to learn their lines and lyrics by heart and remember their cues. Tomorrow will be the start of the dress rehearsals and we are looking forward to some more excitement.
