Dear Parents / Carers

This week, I sent out a letter to parents detailing our school priorities for the year, which focus on:

1 - High-quality teaching and learning

2 - Strengthening EYFS curriculum

3 - Raise overall standards of behaviour

4 - Enhance SEND provision

5 - Develop leadership

These are priorities we will be working on throughout the year. Thank you to those parents who have already sent in feedback regarding our priorities - if you wish to send in any feedback, please email us.

We also sent out our curriculum overviews yesterday. We apologise for the technical difficulty we had but now everyone should be able to see the Google Site (https://sites.google.com/inspirewoodside.co.uk/curriculum-newsletters/home)

We have been busy immersing ourselves in our new learning and provisions. It has been wonderful to see children exploring a range of topics and challenging themselves in their classrooms. This includes yesterday when rain decided to pour whilst some children were doing PE!

I hope everyone has an enjoyable and restful weekend!

Attendance

We expect pupils to maintain a high standard of attendance here at Woodside. We want all our pupils to be able to achieve their very best and in order to do this, they need to be in school as much as possible so they don't miss out on any learning. Everyday is a new learning opportunity!

These are this week's attendance figures and leading class in each phase:

EYFS: Apple 93.6%

KS1: Ash 97.4%

KS2: Juniper and Sycamore 97.5%

It is essential your child is in school everyday.

Inclusion

At school we use a programme called the zones of regulation to talk to the children about their emotions and how to regulate themselves. There are 4 zones in the zones of regulation.

We teach the children to recognise the different emotions that they might feel and that it is ok to feel them. We also teach them how to regulate themselves when they are in the red, yellow or blue zone. If you would like more information about the zones of regulation then please speak to your class teacher.

PE Updates

Please note that this year, we are asking children to change in school. They should bring in their PE bags and keep them in school for the term and take them home at the end of the term. Thank you for supporting us with this.

All children need elastic fronted plimsolls for indoor/outdoor PE which are best kept in a drawstring bag on their cloak peg. Children will need black/blue shorts and a white T-shirt in their PE bag to wear for PE lessons.

Please find below information below on Sports Attack. Within Woodside Primary school we offer the following after school clubs: -

EYFS

Nest

The children in the Nest have settled well and are beginning to follow the Nest routines and expectations. They have started to put aprons on with adult support, some of them are putting them on independently and waiting patiently for their turn to paint. They are beginning to wash their hands for snack time with adult support while forming relationships with all the adults and their peers. Everyone is enjoying accessing a variety of resources and activities independently.

Nursery

This week in Nursery we have been thinking and talking about acceptable things to do inside and outside the classroom. After sharing our ideas, we set our class rules. We talked about the importance of having rules and what would happen if we did not have any rules. To support us we used the colours: green for good and red for bad. In Maths, we have been singing our favourite number rhymes with actions. We were also excited to help one sad ‘Mummy Duck’ by bringing back her ducklings. We have also been making positive friendships.

Reception

It has been great to see how well the children have settled in.

This week in Reception, we have continued to base our learning on the story ‘Goldilocks and The Three Bears’.  Children were able to recall the story using actions.  The children have continued to explore a range of activities and extend their learning beyond carpet sessions.

In Literacy: We continued to practice writing our name, using tracing paper to trace over and copy our name cards. In the reading area, we have enjoyed sharing books and looking at pictures from a range of story books.

Home Learning: Please continue to enjoy sharing stories with your child. Can your child remember and tell you any stories they have heard in class?

Phonics: This week, we have been learning the graphemes (letter name) and phonemes (letter sound); i, n, m, d.

Home Learning: Find things that start with the grapheme and phoneme (sound); i, n, m, d. How many things did you find?

In Maths: The children are still enjoying singing number songs and then applying our counting skills to count objects, touching each object with our finger as we count.  It was fun sharing food out between the three bears.  We shared food out between the bears and then said how much each bear had.

Home Learning: Continue to count different objects around your home.  How many windows are in your house? How much fruit is in the fruit bowl? How many toothbrushes etc.  Remember to count by placing your finger on each object as you count and the last number you say is how many you have altogether.

Reminder: There are many children with clothes/coats and bags that do not have their name written on them.  Please label your child’s clothes, bags, lunch bags and water bottles. It helps them and us! If your child has accidentally taken another child’s things please return them promptly.

If your child has grapes for lunch, for their safety, please ensure that you cut the grapes in half.

Well done, Reception class for having a great week!

Request for parents: We are making and creating next week…could you bring in some old newspapers please?

Key Stage One

Year 1

In English this week, Year 1 has been building on their writing from last week by writing lines about what their shadow likes to eat and the activities they like to do to create a poem. They have been using a capital letter to start the lines and finger spaces to separate words.

In maths, the children have been using number tracks and resources to show one more and one less than a number within 10. They have been practicing writing the numerals the correct way.

Year 2

This week, the children reread the story ‘The Three Billy Goats’ Stuff’ and then they were asked to retell the story.

Questions were asked to ensure their understanding through-out the retelling. Children were given a selection of pictures which they placed in order.

Once in order, they were asked, which time connectives did they know? to clarify and determine which is appropriate with each picture.

In Maths, this week, children recognised and understood the different representations of numbers to 100. They partitioned 2-digit numbers into tens and ones. Children used dienes and manipulatives to support understanding of partitioning numbers.

Lower Key Stage Two

Year 3

Year 3 have continued their learning journey with  ‘My Little Book of Big Freedoms’. We have been planning our own poem that is associated with the animals from the book.  We have started by understanding rhyming words and finding words that rhyme with these words. In Maths, we have been partitioning, comparing and finding more and less than given numbers. In History, we have been learning about Ancient Egyptians and identifying different writing materials. The children created their own sheet of Papyrus.

Year 4

Year 4 children all had a fantastic time visiting the Kew Gardens last week. They were able to visit the Princess of Wales Conservatory, the Temperature House and observe a lot of the wildlife on the grounds of Kew Gardens. Their excitement was displayed in a respectful way and showed on our way back with the children talking about all that they have seen and learnt. The children were able to link their trip to their Science topic of ‘Living things and their Habitats’.

A huge thank you for the fantastic support from all the parents who accompanied year 4 on our trip. We were delighted and appreciative to see that parents were able to take the time out off their day, so this trip could be successful.

Upper Key Stage Two

Year 5

This week, the children have continued their learning journey with ‘The Boy and the Globe’ by looking at the features of a narrative, concentrating on how to uplevel their sentences with a range of fronted adverbials and conjunctions. In maths, the children continued to develop their number understanding, investigating the power of 10 by practising multiplying and dividing by 10. In Art, the children have been investigating ‘Pop Art’ so that they will have the skills and techniques to create their own Pop Art portrait of William Shakespeare.

Year 6

Year 6 has had a remarkable few weeks back in school. Their attitude to learning has been astounding which has led to them producing excellent work to a high standard. One of which was a piece of work, a drawing of The Heart, which is part of our Science topic on the Circulatory System. We surely have some budding artists amongst us.

An excellent start year 6, keep it up!

Nasal Flu Vaccination Programme

Your child should have brought home a letter about the NHS annual flu vaccination programme for this winter.

The Immunisation Team’s visit will take place on 11th October.

Flu can be an unpleasant illness and sometimes causes serious complications. This annual vaccination programme is a quick and simple spray up the nose. It is in place to help protect your child against the flu. It also helps protect more vulnerable members of our community by reducing the spread of flu.

The letter was accompanied by a consent form. You should return the form to school as soon as possible whether or not you give your consent to the vaccine.

Please read the letter carefully for more information, or contact the office if you did not receive the letter and form.
