Dear Parents and Carers,
We hope you have had a wonderful week! It's been a busy few weeks at Woodside and the half term break has come around so quickly. The children approached this half term with the right attitude and have matured so much as they all enter their final term of the year.
On Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, Year 1 and 2 competed in a Cross Country event. Well done to all the Year 1 and Year 2 pupils for participating in the Cross Country competition. They had to run, walk or jog around the whole school site. We had fantastic weather and all the children worked so hard to complete the challenge. Thank you to Year 5 Willow class, who also supported the event as Sport Leaders. They encouraged the children, helped set up alongside Mrs Pearce and organised the children on the day. They showed fantastic effort! Lastly, a big thank you to all the staff taking part.
Oasis Academy Arena is delighted to invite year 5 pupils to their very special Discovery Day on Saturday, 10th June, from 9:30 am to 1:00 pm. This is a great opportunity for children to have a fun morning, getting a taste for secondary school whilst having exciting activities with the English, Music, and Computing departments! Limited spaces are available, so book quickly via www.oasisacademyarena.org/admissions/discoverydays to secure your child's spot. Don't miss this opportunity for a free fun morning of hands-on learning and exploration. We hope to see you there!
Mr Atwal the new headteacher from September will be visiting the school after the half term on various dates below. Mr Atwal invites you all to meet him on Friday 16th June at 9am in the community room for tea and cake.
“I feel excited and privileged to be leading Woodside Primary School. I have had the privilege of serving communities across Greenwich and Medway and I am eager to join Croydon and work with the staff, children and families to build upon the successes that have already been achieved at the school. I look forward to meeting you all over the next term.”
We wish you a restful half term break and look forward to seeing you all on Monday 5th June!

EYFS
This week, the children have been working hard engaging in a wide range of indoor and outdoor learning activities. They have been exploring jobs people do and talking about what they want to do when they grow up. The children have come up with interesting jobs such as a firefighter, police officer, builder, and many more.
The children have extended their learning beyond carpet sessions by going on to independently write about what they want to be when they grow up. They got creative by drawing and painting a picture of their favourite job.
Parent’s, during this half-term, please encourage your child to continue practising their phonics by reading regularly.
Please remember to return all Little Wandle books. The books go out on Friday and need to be returned on a Monday.
KS1
In Year 2, this week the children created and took part in an obstacle course. They planned and designed their obstacle course and justified their reasons for using different materials, for different equipment. They also justified why they have used particular equipment and why/how they were challenging.
In maths, we subtracted 2 digit numbers with or without exchange. They arranged the numbers in the correct column.
In Year 1 this week, the children wrote a letter to their friend using the information about gorillas. They explored the facts they had learnt about Gorillas and used this in their letter. In Maths, children used their knowledge and understanding of describing turns by using the language ‘quarter turn’, ‘half turn’, ‘three quarters turn’ and ‘full turn’.
Lower Key Stage Two
Telling the time is a skill that all children should have.
In maths year 4 has been learning how to tell the time using analogue and digital clocks. They have shown enormous resilience in achieving their daily step to success and are now able to explain, when questioned, what the time is. Well done for your perseverance year 4. Please continue to question your child/ren regarding time and the duration of activities.
Have a lovely break!
We have had a very productive week in Year 3. The children have been learning about weights and measures. They are able to understand the difference between capacity and volume and in English they have been writing up their stories for publication.
Upper Key Stage Two
Year 5 have been extremely productive this week. In English, they have begun writing their documentary script. They ensured that all the features of what makes a good documentary script were utilised and thought carefully about their language choices and technical vocabulary. In maths, they have explored 3-D shapes and their properties. In geography, the children created a fact file about their chosen natural disaster. They thought of their title, then included facts to match their subheadings and also drew pictures and diagrams with annotated captions.
In Year 6 this week, the children have been working really hard on their extended writing to meet their end of Key Stage Writing Targets. They have focused on 2 pieces this week: an engaging setting and character description and a formal letter of complaint.
