"Kindness is the bridge between all hearts" – Jane Austen

Dear Parents and Carers

It has been a busy week despite the challenges with the weather during what should be “summer”. On Monday and Tuesday, our Reception and Year 1 children had the opportunity to meet a real life author - Kita Casey. Kita came in and delivered workshops to the children, read her story and played games. The children really enjoyed the experience and the chance to meet her.

Throughout this week, we have been joined by members of our new leadership team. They have spent time going round classes, speaking to children and completing handovers. A reminder next Thursday, there is an opportunity to meet the new Leadership Team when we host a Coffee Morning (Thursday 18th July at 9am in the Community Room).

Today, children’s reports have gone home and we are excited to share their progress with you. On Tuesday 23rd July, children have the opportunity to bring their learning home (their exercise books) so don’t forget to get your child to bring in a bag on this day!

Lastly, I want to share some good news. On Tuesday, the school received the outcomes of the KS2 assessments for pupils in Year 6 - parents will find their child’s individual outcomes in their child’s reports. I am pleased to share that for pupils meeting the expected standard across reading, writing and maths, we have the highest results the school has seen in over 5 years and we exceeded the national average. Not just that, those pupils working at a greater depth standard across reading, writing and maths has not only exceeded the national average, but also is the highest the school has seen - including during its time during the Synaptic Trust. I will speak more about our successes around not just Year 6, but our other year groups and statutory assessments in my end of year letter but for now, I want to not only thank all the school staff who have supported the Year 6s, but also to the children themselves for showing great determination and resilience.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Attendance

We expect pupils to maintain a high standard of attendance here at Woodside. We want all our pupils to be able to achieve their very best and in order to do this, they need to be in school as much as possible so they don't miss out on any learning. Everyday is a new learning opportunity!

These are this week's attendance figures and leading class in each phase:

EYFS: Apple 93%

KS1: Cedar 95.9%

KS2: Sycamore 96.9%

It is essential your child is in school everyday.

We want all children to come to school each day, but we know that there are some days children are just too ill to attend, or will spread illness to others.

The NHS website Is My Child Too Ill For School is a useful place to look for guidance.

If your child has vomiting or diarrhoea they should stay away from school until they have not been sick or had diarrhoea for at least 2 days (48 hours).

Children can attend school with cold sores, conjunctivitis, hand, foot & mouth disease, slapped cheek (fifth) disease, sore throat, thread-worms or ear infections as long as they don't have a temperature as well.

Please encourage your children to wash their hands regularly and use and throw away tissues properly.

Inclusion

Transitions can be very challenging to children as they often involve unfamiliar environments, new routines and the need to adapt to different social dynamics which can lead to feelings of uncertainty. Here are three tips to help to prepare your child for transition into their new year group or school:

Encourage your child to make friends: Help your child to develop their social skills and create opportunities for them to interact with their peers. Arrange playdates or social activities with other children from their new class or school if possible. Teach them how to make friends and role play situations. This can help the transition smoother and foster positive experiences.

We would like to share with you this very exciting event for SEND Dads in London.

On Saturday 31st August from 1pm until 4pm at Browns Brasserie & Bar, Covent Garden where You will enjoy a two-course lunch* as you meet and chat with other dads in a lovely venue.

EYFS

Nest

Children had a fantastic week in the Nest, they really enjoyed our role-play 'Ice Cream Parlour' area. Children have been playing co-operatively, making ice creams for each other, taking turns in the pop up ice cream van, selling and making ice creams and counting the ice creams, writing down the orders. This activity was led by the children's interests. Through the activity, they have been expanding their language, mathematical skills, social skills and confidence along with other areas of learning. Children also have been enjoying making hand prints on their folders, talking about the texture, how it feels and naming colours, going on to count their fingers.

Nursery

This week, Nursery children have been learning about ‘The Enormous Turnip’. The story is about helping each other and linked well with our value of collaboration. The children read the story and then acted it out. Children here can be seen helping to pull the turnip out as it had grown and ready for harvesting. They have also been practicing songs for their end of year performance for their parents and carers.

In Maths, children have been learning about using the maths symbols such as plus (+) minus (-) and equals (=). They have also used the outdoor area to support their knowledge about numbers through the hop-scotch game and skittles game during carpet sessions.

Reception

This week in Literacy, children have been looking back at their learning from the beginning of September to write their reflections for their end of year reports. It was interesting to listen to the children talking about what they liked, what they have learnt and what they are looking forward to when they go to YR1.

Home Learning: Children can tell you about their likes and dislikes when they are in Reception.

In Phonics, we have come to the end of the weekly planned phonics sessions. Reception children have been revisiting previously learnt tricky words and new words. Children have been using their phonics knowledge to write descriptive sentences.

Home Learning: Please continue to support your child with blending ready for next week. Support your children to learn how to blend (put sounds together to read a word) through games. Please continue to log in on the 'Little Wandle Phonics' using the QR code. You can also find blending games on YouTube. These games are important to support your children to be able to read independently.

In Maths this week, the children have been exploring number sentences using stories. They have been able to write the numbers on their whiteboards following a story. As the story is being told, children are writing the number on their boards e.g 10+4=14. Children have been learning about putting a bigger number in their heads to count on.

Home Learning: Children come up with their own number stories and write a number sentence making sure they have the correct symbols.

REMINDERS:

Thank you to those children who are promptly returning all Phonics reading books back to school. Please can you ensure that your child continues to return books borrowed from school as we are coming to the end of the year.

Key Stage One

Year 1

In Maths this week, Year 1 continued to learn telling the time to the hour and half hour. They used practical resources, such as small clocks, and worked collaboratively in pairs to practice telling the time. Year 1 also revisited the lesson on time concepts such as before and after.

In English this week, we had a special visitor Kita Casey who is the author of the book 'DAISY POM-A-PUG'. They learned a song about the character and enjoyed reading the story together with the author.

In RE this week, children continued learning about Hinduism. In particular, they were learning about Raksha Bandhan - a celebration of the bond between siblings. They also learned how to make their own Rakhi - a bracelet, which they could give to a friend or a sibling.

Year 2

This week, Year 2 engaged in many art activities in the afternoons. They have been focusing on the work of 'Eric Carle', a famous author and artist. They learnt facts about him before exploring his style of work. Year 2 looked at the different types of collaging skills, tearing and ripping, discussing the effect they have on the artwork as a whole. They then explored the use of colour and patterns using oil crayons to create mark making patterns on paper before going over their patterns using watercolour paints. They created an ombre effect background, before cutting and sticking their patterns together to make a garden scene to link to our core movie of 'Gnomeo and Juliet'.

Lower Key Stage Two

Year 3

This week the year 3’s have been exploring the school and surrounding areas. They collected data while investigating the environmental, human and physical features. This was in the form of field work. It was great to see children working collaboratively and independtly providing ideas for how we can help or improve the environment and areas we live in.

Year 4

This week Oak have been swimming at South Norwood Leisure Centre. The children were assessed on Monday to determine their ability levels before being allocated one of the two available pools. On Friday some of the children wore pyjama bottoms and long sleeve t-shirts to get a feel for how different it is to swim wearing clothes. Pine will commence lessons on Monday next week, so parents will need to remember to provide long sleeve clothing for Friday’s session.

Upper Key Stage Two

Year 5

Year 5 began to publish their amazing, third person narratives based on the core text ‘Floodland’ by Marcus Sengwick. We are very proud of our much improved handwriting and presentation skills.

Our Maths lessons were dedicated to converting between various metric measures. We have used the bar model and the double line method to find the equivalent conversions.

In History, we are working on the double page spreads showing all the knowledge that we acquired about the Anglo Saxons.

Year 6

It is that time of the year again!

Our year 6 children are all in character, rehearsing for their final production of the Lion King.

The children are all giving it their best and can not wait for them to start performing in front of a live audience.

We are all excited, who knows, we might have our next famous British actor/actress discovered during the production.

Thank you for supporting us with this.

All children need elastic fronted plimsolls for indoor/outdoor PE which are best kept in a drawstring bag on their cloak peg. Children will need black/blue shorts and a white t-shirt in their PE bag to wear for PE lessons. Please bring a water bottle, which must be named.

Summer 2 Sports Clubs this term at Woodside Primary School

We are delighted to offer some after-school, lunchtime and breakfast sports clubs this half term as follows;

Places are limited for school-run clubs and parents can sign children up for school clubs by signing into Arbor online or using the Arbor App.

Sign up for school-run clubs will open on Thursday 6th June at 6pm. If you need support with using

Arbor, or need help to sign your child up, please contact the office who can do this for you. Children who attend clubs will need to bring a change of clothes suitable for their club (school PE kit is suitable) and a water bottle. Long hair should be tied back.

Children at breakfast club only will be expected to come to school in PE kit and change after the session.

Children should be dropped off and picked up promptly from the main school office - please ensure you note the end time for the club your child is attending.

End of Year Class Celebrations

Each class will be celebrating the end of the year in the afternoon on Wednesday 24th July. They will have the chance to have a class celebration with games, stories, dancing, films and group activities in the afternoon.

Children are invited to bring in one snack each for this celebration. As a healthy-eating and nut-free school, we are asking for donations of food that are nut free and not overly sweet (e.g. sausage rolls, chips and dips, fruit, popcorn, crisps etc). Any uneaten food will be returned at the end of the day or disposed of.

Belongings and Equipment

Please remember that children should not bring pencil cases, toys or other items to school - we cannot be held responsible if these items go missing or are damaged. Pencil cases are a distraction - we provide all necessary equipment for our students to use during lessons.

In line with our school policies, we ask that children do not wear smartwatches during school hours. This ensures a fair and uniform approach to the use of technology within the classroom setting.

To avoid confusion and loss of personal items, please ensure your child's name is clearly written on all of their clothing. This includes uniforms, PE kit, jackets or coats, and any other items they may bring to school. This simple step greatly aids in the quick and accurate return of lost belongings. Please regularly check that your child is returning home with their own property.

Thank you for your support with these requests.

Please note. When entering school property, you must dismount and walk with all wheeled modes of transport. This is to keep everyone on school property safe.

Thank you for your cooperation

Polite Reminder

At  the start and end of the day, please do not use any of the climbing equipment in the playground.

This equipment needs to be supervised by a member of staff due to our health and safety policy.

Thank you for you cooperation

Sunny Weather Advice

Please ensure your child has a named water bottle, a sunhat and sun cream applied in the morning as needed.

Children must not wear sunglasses due to health and safety unless the eye-wear is prescribed by an Optician/Doctor for medical reasons.
