Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back to the last half term of the year. We can't believe how the year is flying by. We hope you all had a restful half term break and that all the children and staff are ready for an exciting end of term. We have lots of fantastic events planned.
The year 6 team have been working hard to organise trips to Chessington and Oxygen for the children as a reward for all their hard work over the year. We had writing moderators from the Local Authority in school today. They sat with the year 6 teachers to look at the children's writing. They were very impressed with the range of genres of writing the children can produce and the range of literacy devices they use in their writing. Well done to the whole of year 6. Year 6 have also started to plan their end of year production which will be a performance of the Greatest Showman. We are looking forward to sharing this with parents at the end of term.
Next week year 6 will be running a tuck shop at the end of each day to raise money for their upcoming trips and end of year events.
Woodside's got talent has started this week with class auditions this afternoon. We are looking forward to enjoying the range of talents we know the children have. Those children that get through their class audition will perform at the year group selection on Friday 16th June. Phase heats will be on Friday 23rd June with the finals on Friday 7th July. Good luck to everyone taking part.
Ms Pearce is busy planning our sports days for each year group. These will happen (weather permitting) during the week beginning 3rd July.
Year 1 and some year 2 children will have their phonics checks next week. These will be completed by their class teacher or Ms Mapp.

Inclusion
Punctuality
Being punctual to school is important for all children. Arriving promptly makes sure that your child doesn’t miss work, and that disruption to the teacher and other pupils is minimised. Persistent lateness can lead to a significant loss in learning time.
Ways you can help your child to be punctual:
encourage them to pack their bag and get their uniform ready the night before
make sure they get a good night's sleep - don't let them have mobile phones or tablets as they might be tempted to go online
have a bedtime and morning routine in place - use visuals to help them remember
Developing good punctuality habits now will help them when they are older.

EYFS
Reception
All the children have returned back to school ready and raring to learn.
Well done to those of you who practiced your sounds, numbers and reading whilst you were away from school. It really makes a difference.
Literacy
We have been looking at pictures and writing simple sentences.
We listened to the story, ‘The Squirrels Who Squabbled’ and talked about what we do if we squabble with our friends.
Maths
We have been learning about 2D and 3D shapes.
Home Learning
What shapes can you see around your home?
Reading
Read with your child every day and use their reading book over the weekend.
Remember to return all reading books to school.
Home learning
Talk with your children about what they need to do if they fall out with their friends, for example make sure they are sharing, taking turns with gentle hands and words.
KS1
Year 1
This week in year 1, we have been busy constructing factual sentences about pollution and writing our introduction for a fact file.
Year 2
This week in year 2, we have been busy gathering information for our DT fortnight. We have been learning about Caribbean treats and are excited to share photos next week when we bake our golden treats. Watch this space!
Lower Key Stage Two
Year 3
In Year 3 we have been learning about the different features of a play script, first by using them through acting activities and then by identifying them on the page and labelling them. This is in preparation for next week when we will begin to turn the story of Oliver Twist into a play script.
Year 4
It has been an immersive start for year 4. They have engaged with our new core text in English "The Boy at the Back of the Class." They continue to develop empathy and understanding of how others feel that do not speak their language. Great start year 4, keep pushing forwards.
Upper Key Stage Two
Year 5
This week linking to our David Attenborough inspired biographies and documentary script of a chosen animal, Year 5 has a chance to visit and explore London Zoo. They travelled up to London amicably, before viewing a range of animals in their natural environments. Year 5 saw a variety of animals from gorillas and tigers, to aye-ayes and sloths. The children had a chance to go in with some of the animals, such as monkeys and lemurs, who freely roamed around them. The trip itself was very strenuous and involved lots of walking, roughly 15,000 steps! We are all very proud of how you represented Woodside and loved seeing your expressions when you saw the animals.
Year 6
We are fortunate at Woodside to own a set of still pans. Our Year 6 pupils learnt standard steel pan techniques and gained fluency in Caribbean and classic rhythms . The whole school was treated to a beautiful concert performed by our Year 6 talented musicians. They played some favourite tunes and also some classics from Trinidad and Tobago also called Calypso and Soca .
