Dear Parents and Carers

We are building up to the festive season and the corridors are being filled with children singing ready for their performances. We will be holding our rehearsals next week before unveiling to parents and carers.

I must take this opportunity to talk about our values and behaviours. Unfortunately, we have seen behaviours from a small number of our community which do not uphold our values. We appreciate there may be disagreements between adults, however, we all need to model our school values whilst on the school premises at all times. As a school, our vision is to build a thriving and inclusive school with the community at the heart of everything we do. In order to achieve this, we need to ensure that we work with the community closely and the community also supports us by modelling our values. If there has been an issue or something you may feel aggrieved by, we do not mind if you come into school and speak to school leaders - we can create a safe space for adults to support them in that moment, an offer of a listening ear, hot or cold drink to help de-escalate any situation. We do not want anyone taking matters into their own hands as this type of behaviour is not acceptable, whether it is verbal or physical.  If members of our community want to raise concerns, everyone should follow our complaints policy (found here).

A reminder to parents and carers that if you were not able to attend Parents Evening, then please rearrange with your class teacher. There are still some who have not had a meeting.

Also, a gentle reminder that on Monday 8th January, school is closed for INSET day.

We hope everyone has a good weekend!

Attendance

We expect pupils to maintain a high standard of attendance here at Woodside. We want all our pupils to be able to achieve their very best and in order to do this, they need to be in school as much as possible so they don't miss out on any learning. Everyday is a new learning opportunity!

These are this week's attendance figures and leading class in each phase:

EYFS: Apple 94.7%

KS1: Fir 95.2%

KS2: Juniper 96.8%

It is essential your child is in school everyday.

SAFE SETTINGS, CONTROLS & MONITORING

Apple, Android and Microsoft have tools to help you control what younger children can use and how long for. Click on the images below for more information.

Once they are older and have your trust, the same tools can help avoid arguments and help them learn to self-regulate (how long have they really been on insta today? have they put down the phone at all in the last week?).

Follow the picture links for more information

The London Grid for Learning have lots of information about how to keep your child safe online.

Use the link above to access their parent safe page.

EYFS

Nest

This week, the children in the Nest have been talking about the story 'Owl Babies' making connections to how the owls are feeling and what that could look like. The children then got creative making owl puppets using different materials and joining techniques.

In Maths, we have been learning about capacity. During water play, the children have been using a variety of different containers to fill and empty going on to use vocabulary based on their observations.

Nursery

In Literacy, this week we recalled the story of ‘Stickman’. We extended our learning by talking about what happened at the beginning, the middle and the end of the story. We made our learning extra exciting and ‘sticky’ by using our talk for action skills and as we read the story, we thought about and performed actions to match Stickman's exciting adventure!

In Maths, we explored the concept of capacity and how much containers can hold. We used the language, ‘empty, full, half full and half empty'. Children talked about what they could see, "This bottle is empty" and they added the vocabulary of weight by saying, "This one is full and it’s heavy".

Reception

This week, the children have enjoyed learning based on parts of our body.  They named different body parts and used their prior learning to create portraits using natural resources.

In Literacy: We continued to read through the story, ‘Here We Are’. We focused on different parts of our body and discussed what actions each part helps us to do.

Home Learning: How many parts of your body can your child identify? Try drawing and labelling a body outline.

Phonics: This week, the children recapped previous sounds by blending and segmenting words such as: wag, box, yes, jam, buzz, shop, think, quick, chip and wing.

Home Learning: practise reading and writing the above words.  How many sounds can you hear in each word?

In Maths: This week, the children explored different 2D shapes and discussed the properties of these shapes. The children enjoyed going on a shape hunt looking for objects that have the shape of a triangle, square, circle and rectangle.

Home Learning:  How many 2D shapes can you recall?  Try drawing a picture using different shapes (triangle, circle, square and rectangle).

REMINDERS: Please can you return any books that your child has previously borrowed from school.  Thank you

Well done to all the children for have a great week!

The Reception Team

Key Stage One

Year 1

This week in English, the children have published their narratives of 'Little Red Riding Hood'. They all showed resilience and took care with their handwriting when copying their story. We have begun finding out about features of a diary as we will be writing a diary entry as Little Red Riding Hood. We also did some hot seating in role as Little Red Riding Hood. We took turns to ask her questions about how she felt during the story and then hot seated as her making sure we captured Little Red Riding Hood’s inner thoughts and feelings.

In Maths this week, the children have been learning how to subtract. We did subtraction by crossing out images of objects and we used a number line and made jumps backwards because we know that when we subtract we get less.

In design and technology, we used our previous designs of a building to help us create our buildings. We considered how we would join materials together and used different things to attach parts together.

Year 2

This week in English, year 2 has explored a range of line poems, identifying the features in a line poem but also how to write one. We were inspired by our core text, ‘The Dark’, using our emotions to describe how we feel about the dark that surrounds us but also how we would feel if we had to enter a pitch black basement by ourselves. We used our descriptive phrases that we generated from the previous weeks to help us describe what we could, see, feel, hear and smell using the repeated phrase ‘I am afraid of the dark’ to begin each verse. We will be performing our poems at the beginning of next week, maybe your child can share with you their poems with their own mini performances.

In Maths this week, the children have been learning the names of 2D and 3D shapes, exploring the differences between a 2D and 3D shape. They have learnt new vocabulary such as vertices (corners), sides and faces (3D shape only). They continued the week focusing on just 2D shapes, looking at the different shape names and how many sides and vertices each shape has, for example a triangle has 3 vertices and 3 sides. They then had a go at drawing the shapes out into their books using their squared grids and a ruler to help them. A fun activity you can try at home or walking around is to go on a shape hunt and see how many different shapes you can find.

Lower Key Stage Two

Year 3

In Maths, we have been focussing on multiplication and division facts for 2, 5 and 10 times tables. Children have been using their multiplication skills to have an understanding of grouping.

During our English lessons, we have been planning our newspaper article which will detail the events that have happened so far in our core text - 'Rosie Revere, Engineer'. We have been using the 5 W’s to plan out our newspaper article and Rosie’s background.

This week in Science, year 3 planned their comparative test on magnets. The focus question was 'How could we test the strength of magnets?’ This leads them towards testing how many paperclips a magnet can hold. The children will be using different sizes of magnets to investigate their test.

Year 4

Over the past week, year 4 children took on the important task of composing persuasive speeches on the pressing issue of climate change. These young learners demonstrated a commendable commitment to understanding and addressing environmental challenges. Through thoughtful writing and research, the children honed their skills in articulating persuasive arguments aimed at raising awareness and inspiring action on climate change.

Following this creative exercise, the students were given a unique and engaging opportunity to bring their words to life. The classroom transformed into a newsroom as the children stepped into the role of reporters, tasked with investigating and reporting on the real-world impacts of climate change on the environment. This hands-on activity provided them with a practical understanding of the issues they had explored in their speeches, fostering a deeper connection to the importance of addressing climate change. Through the combination of persuasive speech writing and role-playing as reporters, the year 4 children not only developed valuable communication skills but also gained a heightened awareness of their ability to make a positive impact. This immersive experience not only encouraged a sense of responsibility towards the environment but also empowered the young learners to actively contribute to the ongoing conversation about climate change.

Upper Key Stage Two

Year 5

In Maths, we continued to explore fractions. We have been adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominators. We then moved onto adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators, where we had to find the common denominator before carrying out the operation.

During our English lessons, we have been planning our newspaper article which will detail the events that have happened so far in our core text - 'Boy in the Tower'. We created sentences using relative clauses and conjunctions.

This week in Science, Year 5 carried out the investigation we planned last week. We were able to conclude that trapping bicarbonate of soda and vinegar together in a bottle sealed with a balloon caused a gas called carbon dioxide to bubble and foam and inflate the balloon.

Year 6

Design Technology

Armed with newfound knowledge, the students were challenged to bring their understanding to life by creating pneumatic hearts using everyday materials. This hands-on approach not only engaged their scientific curiosity but also honed their problem-solving and teamwork skills.

What makes this project truly special is the innovative use of commonplace materials. From plastic bottles and balloons to rubber bands and straws, our Year 6 designers showcased their resourcefulness, proving that creativity knows no bounds.

One of the standout aspects of this project was the students' ability to articulate the purpose of each component in their pneumatic hearts, showcasing a deep understanding of the science behind their creations.

Maths

In our measurement quest, estimation has emerged as a key skill. It's not just about finding the exact measurement; it's about making informed guesses, developing a keen sense of quantity, and appreciating the relative sizes of things around us. Estimating the volume of a jug or the capacity of a bowl has become a thrilling mathematical puzzle for our year 6.

Consent for local trips

You will have spotted that you can now give your consent for your child to attend trips in the locality on Arbor. You will always be told if they are attending a trip locally.

If you have not yet given your consent, please do so by logging into Arbor and checking the Notices section. Here you will see an arrow that allows you to consent.

Belongings and equipment

Please remember that children should not bring pencil cases, toys or other items to school - we cannot be held responsible if these items go missing or are damaged. Pencil cases are a distraction - we provide all necessary equipment for our students to use during lessons.

In line with our school policies, we ask that children do not wear smartwatches during school hours. This ensures a fair and uniform approach to the use of technology within the classroom setting.

To avoid confusion and loss of personal items, please ensure your child's name is clearly written on all of their clothing. This includes uniforms, PE kit, jackets or coats, and any other items they may bring to school. This simple step greatly aids in the quick and accurate return of lost belongings. Please regularly check that your child is returning home with their own property.

Thank you for your support with these requests.

PE Updates

Please note that this year, we are asking children to change in school. They should bring in their PE bags and keep them in school for the term and take them home at the end of the term. Thank you for supporting us with this.

All children need elastic fronted plimsolls for indoor/outdoor PE which are best kept in a drawstring bag on their cloak peg. Children will need black/blue shorts and a white t-shirt in their PE bag to wear for PE lessons.
