"Our true worth is how we value others" – Anne Frank

Dear Parents and Carers

This week has been assessment week at school. Children across all different year groups have been assessed in their learning to help us determine end of year attainment. We will use this information to help us plan for September, as well as to help with our reports - our school reports will be given to parents on Friday 12th July.

We sent out a letter this week by Mrs Pearce about our Sports Days - please save these dates in your diary. We can’t wait to invite you all for some sporting fun!

As a school, we have been focusing on the “Ethic of Excellence”. This is where we show excellence in our behaviours and in our learning. We have been encouraging our children to give the best effort they can and take responsibility for their own actions; by doing so, we can showcase ourselves to be “excellent”. Please speak to your children about the Ethic of Excellence and how they can show this at home and in school.

We hope everyone is enjoying the longer weekend. See you all on Monday.

Attendance

We expect pupils to maintain a high standard of attendance here at Woodside. We want all our pupils to be able to achieve their very best and in order to do this, they need to be in school as much as possible so they don't miss out on any learning. Everyday is a new learning opportunity!

These are this week's attendance figures and leading class in each phase:

EYFS: Apple%

KS1: Cedar 95.8%

KS2: Sycamore 96.2%

It is essential your child is in school everyday.

We want all children to come to school each day, but we know that there are some days children are just too ill to attend, or will spread illness to others.

The NHS website Is My Child Too Ill For School is a useful place to look for guidance.

If your child has vomiting or diarrhoea they should stay away from school until they have not been sick or had diarrhoea for at least 2 days (48 hours).

Children can attend school with cold sores, conjunctivitis, hand, foot & mouth disease, slapped cheek (fifth) disease, sore throat, thread-worms or ear infections as long as they don't have a temperature as well.

Please encourage your children to wash their hands regularly and use and throw away tissues properly.

SEND Parent Coffee Morning

Last Friday (6th June) we held our regular SEND Coffee Morning where Mrs Georgiades led the session with a focus on Lego Therapy.

Lego therapy was initially developed as a social development program for children with social communication difficulties. It uses children's love of Lego play, as well as their strengths and interests, to develop communication and social skills.

Key skills that are practised during Lego therapy include:

The morning was very successful and gave the parents/carers an opportunity to participate in practising these key skills themselves!

Our next SEND Coffee Morning will be held on Friday 12th July at 9am in the Community Room - Mrs Georgiades will be demonstrating ‘Bucket Time’ also known as Attention Autism. First developed by Gina Davies, Speech and Language Therapist, this intervention promotes and develops early communication.

The Mental Health Support Team (MHST) are running another set of Online Parent/Carer Webinars during the Summer term.

Parents and Carers can sign up via Eventbrite here: MHST Parent Webinars

EYFS

Nest

Children have been continuing to enjoy the story 'The Tiny Seed'. Children have been taking turns to retell the story in their words, answering and asking simple questions.

In Maths, children have been identifying numbers 1-5 and counting in correct order. Children have also been really enjoying the nursery garden, exploring in the large sand pit, filling and emptying containers and talking about capacity

For Physical Development, the children have really enjoyed exploring with playdough, they made plants with flowers, using different tools. As children were engaged they named the different parts of the plant such as roots, stem and leaves. Children were making flowers out of construction materials and using the bikes and climbing up the large climbing frame.

Nursery

This week, Nursery children have continued with their core-text  ‘Oliver’s Vegetables.’ They have been learning about names of different vegetables. The vegetables they were learning about are vegetables that most children do not like. They talked about their colours and described what they looked like before and after cutting them. They then went on to use playdough to create their own vegetables. Nursery children had good skills and were excited to be using different cutting tools.

Reception

In Literacy, we continue to use our core-text, ‘The Squirrels Who Squabbled’, focusing on what can be found in the woods. Children had to identify things that can be found in the woods such as, twigs, mushrooms, moss and stones. Some of our sentences were: This is a mushroom. It looks like an umbrella. It feels squishy. We have also been practicing using the writer’s tool kit (capital letters, finger spaces, full stops and sounds).

Home Learning: Children describe objects found in their houses.

In Phonics, the children who are on Phase 4 phonics continue to use their phonics knowledge to read longer words that have digraphs and trigraphs. They are now able to chunk longer words to be able to read those words.

Home work: As most children are struggling with blending, please  support your children to learn how to blend (put sounds together to read a word) through games.

Please continue to login on the Little Wandle Phonics using the QR code. You can also find blending games on YouTube. These games are important to support your children to be able to read independently.

In Maths this week, children have continued exploring odd and even numbers. They have used numicon, different objects and number lines to find odd and even numbers. Children now know that even numbers have partners and odd numbers have no partners. They also explored some doubling using cubes and other objects.

Home Learning: Children can continue to extend their learning about odd and even numbers by using different household items.

REMINDERS: Thank you to those children who are promptly returning all phonic reading books back to school. Please can you ensure that your child continues to return books borrowed from school.

Thank you.

Key Stage One

Year 1

In English this week, year 1 have been learning about pollution in the ocean and writing fact files about how we can stop pollution. We have been learning about how to reduce, reuse and recycle plastic waste.

In Art, we have been learning about sculpture and are very excited about making our own sculptures of a jellyfish from recycled materials.

In Maths, we have been finding one more and one less of a number and using the the symbols less than <, greater than > and equal to  ⚌  to describe the relationship between numbers.

As part of our Science topic we have been learning about the seasons and the months of the year.

Year 2

This week, Year 2 have enjoyed watching ‘Gnomeo and Juliet’ as a part of our core film focus for this term. They watched the film and discussed the main plot points that happened during the film. They then used Gnomeo’s garden to create a beautiful description of a setting using adverbs, adjectives and similes to describe what they could see, hear, touch, challenging themselves to think about what they might be able to smell. The children used their outside learning space to help them, looking at the grass, trees and nature sounds.

In Maths this week, Year 2 have continued with their topic of time, learning how to tell the time to the hour and solving worded problems. Please when you are at home or out and you see a clock, take the time to stop and ask your child what the time is. They have worked extremely hard to use their 5 times tables and remember how to tell if it is past the hour or to the next hour.

Lower Key Stage Two

Year 3

All of Year 3 has shown excellent effort this week while completing their assessments. Thank you parents for supporting them, it really does make a huge difference.

In Geography, we have started learning what 8 points on a compass is and locating human features in our environment and the world around us.

In English, we have started to get the children to think about their learning journey throughout the past year and write up their reflection.

Year 4

It’s a short week, it’s assessment week and Year 4 have started to complete their times table checks!

We have moved onto our new art topic this week, Surrealism. The children looked at and discussed some important works from the artists Valentina Brostean and Salvador Dali. They selected their favourites and created a ‘mood board’ of ideas that they can use in the creation of their own art.

Upper Key Stage Two

Year 5

Year 5 began researching information about the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings. We are going to explore all about the invasions, lifestyle, culture and the legacy of Anglo-Saxons.

In Maths, we are still learning about the addition and subtraction of decimals with different numbers of decimal places.

Our grammar, punctuation and spelling tests went well but we know that we will have to still work on our spellings. We are sending home the list of statutory, year 5 and 6 spellings for everyone to practise.

Well done to all the children for showing great resilience during our assessment week.

Year 6

Our year 6 are back and settled for learning this summer!

This week in DT, they explored the art of traditional quilt making. They analysed how patchworks blankets are created and how they are used traditionally to tell stories.

They also researched about modern quilt artists and studied their artwork to learn more about the inspiration behind their art.

To further develop their learning, they used binka and cotton to practise a range of stitching techniques. They recapped their previous years learning on how to thread a needle. See some amazing art stitching techniques completed by our children.

Warmer Weather is on the Way!

With this in mind, please ensure your child has a named water bottle, sunhat and sun cream applied in the morning as needed.

Children must not wear sunglasses due to health and safety unless the eye-wear is prescribed by an Optician/Doctor for medical reasons.

Many thanks for supporting with this

Belongings and Equipment

Please remember that children should not bring pencil cases, toys or other items to school - we cannot be held responsible if these items go missing or are damaged. Pencil cases are a distraction - we provide all necessary equipment for our students to use during lessons.

In line with our school policies, we ask that children do not wear smartwatches during school hours. This ensures a fair and uniform approach to the use of technology within the classroom setting.

To avoid confusion and loss of personal items, please ensure your child's name is clearly written on all of their clothing. This includes uniforms, PE kit, jackets or coats, and any other items they may bring to school. This simple step greatly aids in the quick and accurate return of lost belongings. Please regularly check that your child is returning home with their own property.

Thank you for your support with these requests.
