We have a number of children and staff with serious nut allergies in our school. For anyone with a nut allergy, exposure can cause a severe, potentially life-threatening allergic reaction (anaphylaxis). It’s not only eating nuts that can trigger a reaction – touching a nut product or close contact with someone who has recently eaten nuts can also provoke anaphylactic shock (causing difficulty breathing or swallowing). Our staff are trained to use Epi-Pens (adrenaline auto-injectors) which must be administered immediately if such a reaction occurs.
With this in mind, we politely ask that no products containing nuts are sent into school for snacks or lunch. This is critically important for the safety of those with allergies. For example, please do not send:
Peanut butter sandwiches
Chocolate spreads that contain nuts (e.g., Nutella)
Chocolate bars with nuts (e.g., Snickers)
Cereal bars or granola bars containing nuts
Cakes, biscuits, or cookies made with nuts
Satay sauces or products (which contain peanut)
Any other snacks or sauces containing obvious nuts
We kindly ask you to check ingredient labels carefully when packing lunches or snacks. We understand this extra step can be time-consuming, but we know you recognize how important it is. By keeping all nut products out, we can ensure that – like many schools in the area – we become a completely NUT FREE SCHOOL.
If you have any questions or concerns about this policy, please speak to a member of staff. Thank you very much for your consideration and for helping us safeguard the health of our children and staff.
