At Ysgol Y Bryn, we know that emotional wellbeing is just as important as academic progress. That’s why we’re proud to have two fully trained ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support Assistant) practitioners delivering dedicated sessions each week to support pupils’ emotional development.
ELSA is a national, evidence-based programme developed by educational psychologists to support children and young people in schools. It helps pupils understand and manage their emotions, develop resilience, build positive relationships, and thrive socially and emotionally.
ELSA sessions are not therapy — they are targeted, planned interventions delivered in school by trained support staff under the supervision of an educational psychologist.
At Ysgol Y Bryn, our ELSA practitioners work one-to-one or in small groups with pupils who may be experiencing difficulties with:
Anxiety or worry
Low self-esteem or confidence
Friendship challenges
Loss or bereavement
Emotional regulation and anger
Separation or attachment issues
Social communication
Each session is designed to be safe, supportive, and child-led — allowing pupils space to talk, reflect, and grow in confidence. Sessions often include play, roleplay, creative activities, games, and storytelling to help children express themselves in a way that suits them.
Our two trained ELSA practitioners run weekly sessions during the school day. These sessions are planned and reviewed regularly in consultation with the ALNCo, class teachers and, where appropriate, parents/carers. Pupils may work with an ELSA for a short block of sessions or for a longer period depending on their individual needs.
ELSA has a powerful, lasting impact on children’s wellbeing and wider school experience. It helps pupils to:
Understand and name their emotions
Build resilience and learn coping strategies
Improve self-esteem and confidence
Strengthen friendships and social skills
Re-engage positively with learning
Feel heard, valued and supported
For some children, ELSA is the key to unlocking their full potential.
ELSA is just one of the many ways we support emotional health and wellbeing at Ysgol Y Bryn. It complements our wider pastoral provision, positive behaviour culture, restorative practice approach, and commitment to pupil voice.
By nurturing emotional literacy, we give our learners the tools to succeed not just in school, but in life.
